Why is that part a joke to you? Is Afrikaans not a South African language? Because it is no longer pure Dutch, it's heavily mixed with other South African languages. Many people make this mistake of associating Afrikaans with Apartheid as if there were no Afrikaans-speaking freedom fighters & political activists who died for this country. On those grounds alone, their language deserves to be part of the South African anthem because whether we like it or not, Afrikaans is part of South African culture & without South Africa there would be no Afrikaans. The "we shouldn't have featured Afrikaans because it's a joke" part though, I find a little disrespectful & condescending to us as a people. South African people speak Afrikaans words even before learning other languages, such as English. Many 1st realize this when they start school, that some of the words they've used their whole lives were actually loan words from Afrikaans eg. Ibhekile from beker etc.
