Welfare is for the poor. Petrol is for Nigeria middle class. This why Nigeria is generating more poor people than India. How many people in Nigeria have cars?
Nigeria poor dont need petrol - they need education for their kids, they need security so they can farm/live, they need healthcare, they need piped water, they need electricity.

Nigeria is expending billions in subsidy for middle class instead of social investment in education, security, healthcare and whole thing.

Ghana in that sense has better handle of things...and reflect in hdi

obaaderemi:
The fuel subsidy thing is to Nigeria what the welfare state is to Europe and America, a delicate issue.

If we play our cards right and assuming this fuel price remain constant, we could have something in the range of 250-300 naira. The naira would certainly appreciate by then if we increase our oil production to supply Dangote 300,000bpd and also meet an OPEC quarter of 1.7million bpd.
#250 naira? grin
It's 200naira already. Remove subsidy and see it go as high as #400. Nigerians will scream blue murder and throw out that government. As it stands, Nigerians are tired of the APC government and one of the reasons is fuel price. #250- is reasonable to the average Nigerian but anything beyond that will lead to problems.

As for Dangote and the refurbished refinery, there's no way they're going to sell below cost unless subsidy remains in place. It's a delicate issue. Weaning Nigeria off fuel subsidy will be difficult.

Cost of transportation affects all. Not only people with cars. Traders will automatically jack up the prices of goods. It will lead to a spiral effect. Did you know there's this kind of debate against the welfare state in America too and it's been going on for decades. Certain class of Americans are of the opinion that it's not right to give people unemployment benefits as it dissuades the poor from actively seeking employment.

If the naira appreciates against the dollar significantly then it may be around 250 naira.

Welfare dont cost 1/3 of US budget - Nigeria fuel subsidy is insane.

Of course it could work in small countries but remember Somali is one tribe/language/religion - and they still fight. So this has to go in tandem with other things. Tanzania has less tribalism than Kenya but is less progressive or developed than Kenya. Basically you need to fix all the aspect - social, political, economic
If we be really honest, like really really honest. Tribalism wouldn't be a major issue in Tanzania based on how the tribes in Tanzania are. There are 120 tribes with no major tribe(s). Tanzania has 6 geological zones (Northern, Southern Highlands, Coastal, Western, Lake Zone and Central Zone) with each having a what we can call prominent tribe in the region and the with a lack of a better word lesser tribes having more in common and with tribes from other zones so a majority tribe to rise will be difficult since most of the major tribes has less that 20% of the population. So for tribalism to be an issue in Tanzania was really hard since the numbers weren't there.

Very insightful comment. I never thought about it like that. It makes sense. Nyerere of course was a great nationalist, but TZ made it easier for him.

While some countries celebrate because their banks entered DRC.

Others are busy upgrading theirs to involve Govt-Govt partnership.

Obasanjo spoke in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo when he led two governors, four industrialists, security and energy experts among others on an investment drive.

The ex-leaders trip to the Central African country was upon a request from President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.

Next the president will request we help them deal with Rwandan incursion into his country, militarily.

Well, we have been to Congo under ZAIRE nothing stops us from going there again to loose her from the Ugandan and Rwanda grip.

That's how big brothers role.

Wow quiet a number of Nigerian industrialists there. It means we are already ahead of Kenya in business with Dr Congo. Not just talk or celebration of one or two banks. Nigeria even have three banks doing well on average in Dr Congo.

Amb. Leke Adebiyi will serve as e Interim Secretary. Obasanjo and President Tshisekedi Tshilombo are the Patrons.

The delegation to the DRC included Sanginga, El-Rufai, Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, retired Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, Professor Bart Nnaji, Professor Peter Okebukola and Amb. Robert Adeleke Adebiyi.

Others were Semiu Kolawole Adesina – Sahara Energy Limited Nigeria, Ajibola Adebutu – Founder, JB Farms Lagos Nigeria, Stella Okoli – Founder, Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Edem Adzogenu–Co-Founder, Afrochampions, and Jimi Lawal, El-Rufai’s senior advisor.

I really wish we can look beyond, investment and help them deal with some security problems. That country needs honest support from AU, a lot has been stolen and still being stolen from that Rich vast country. We can immediately summon UG and RW leaders to stop supporting M23, and then we seek ways to stop the exploitation, off course with reduced taxation on our businesses.

No. You can't say Swahili has 50% loaned words.that's false.
Swahili just like any other major international language has many borrowed words, but never 50%,it's estimated to be 10% or less. And those borrowed words words are what spice up the languages. It's even strange for someone to criticize Swahili for borrowing few words instead of criticizing English language for all those Latin and Germany words.Or why are we not talking about the foreign names in our countries?
Why are we not trying to change these colonial names?

Naira would improve if we increase our oil production to the extent whereby we can meet our Quota and also supply Dangote to refine and export.
What sucks up the dollars most is subsidy/importation of PMS. That's our biggest import if you look at the records.

A good chunk of FX goes towards importing petrol and other crude by-products. Dangote refinery should help curb that meaning more FX will be available for other uses.

As much as fuel subsidy will have to go sometime next year every politician whether in government or opposition needs to be blunt and upfront about the implications of its removal. That communication needs to be clear that this is a bitter but inevitable pill that has to be swallowed. Govt too needs to show they are making sacrifices to motivate and encourage the citizens to give them time in the short term until things start to improve.

Welfare is 15% of US budget while fuel subsidy is about 18% of Nigeria's budget. It's not as if it's very huge. All we need is reduce it about 10% and enforce its effectiveness. Removing it outright will cause problems.

Kenya's inflation increased after Ruto removed subsidy.

Why does Nigeria, so-called giant of Africa, have no iconic buildings like Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe has?

Kenya - Kenyatta International Conference Centre - The traditional African hut ideal for symposia and seminars. This is the place where heritage meets modernity.

Ghana - Golden Jubilee House - Represents Golden Stool, the throne of Ashanti kings and symbol of national power.

Zimbabwe - New parilment building inspired by Great Zimbabwe ruins.

etc

SAD!

Some of the DRC's big men are also part of the exploitation. That country's problem is foundational. Congo was not designed to prosper, it was Belgium's slave camp cum mine. The different tribes slapped together to form the country have been at each other's throats since the haphazard exit of Belgium. Nigeria could have easily fallen into the same mess if not for the exposure of the Southerners.

I don't think Congo can be helped. Mobutu had the chance but squandered it.

Well Congolese have their own exposed and educated class too like the Southerners.
I don't think lack of exposure is the Congolese problem. I just believe in the midst of the chaos they need some strong men who can hold the country together (to an extent) and use tact/skill in dealing with the Western powers. This is what Nigerian generals from the early 1970's up until Abacha did to prevent civil wars and other vices (from both the north and south).
In Nigeria's case there have also been several external efforts to mine her resources endlessly like in Congo and cause unrest. Outsiders most likely poisoned Abacha in 1998. Also in 2002, our largest armoury of weapons stored in Lagos was mysteriously destroyed and those weapons were never replaced over time until Buhari (big mistake).
After that incident, Bokoharam and Niger Delta problem began to slowly rear their heads with supply of superior weapons from outside. Bokoharam and the others didn't just start today or in 2009.

There is no much tribal difference - majority of DRC and Congo - was kongo kingdom - with one tribe Kongo/congos - speaking one language.
That is why both countries are named Congo.
The problem is lack of gov capacity to enforce security - more like Nigeria and most of Africa.
The country is too big to be governed by too broke gov - add huge intractable forest.
The country need serious federalism/devolution.
If not being split apart.
What helps Nigeria is federalism.
DRC need more of that...strong regional gov...with enough money to enforce law and order.
It's literally a huge jungle.

Yes the problem is weak or non-existent gov - Zaire instead of building their army - just went abroad and got mercenaries from Russia, South Africa and name them. More like CAR is doing now.

Nigeria was helped by strong men - otherwise it was going to be another wilderness.

Most African countries are too huge to be effectively governed.

Even kenya 2/3 is a wilderness...thankfully it not populated.
