For those interested in organic agriculture, having a strong on-farm composting program is a prerequisite. Composting generally refers to the process of obtaining compost, an end product of biological processes that breakdown organic waste. This end product is used as a soil amendment or fertiliser. The biological processes can involve high internal temperatures (thermophilic) or moderate internal temperatures (mesophilic). "Regular" composting is usually thermophilic and uses soil microbial organisms as the main decomposition agents, while vermicomposting is usually mesophilic and uses earthworms as the main decomposition agents.
