It is over a year now we Nigerian maritime cadets, both government trained and self sponsored have been stranded due to some challenges. The normal procedure after the academic years of both marine engineering and marine transportation cadets, is ‘’one year of shipboard training in order to get their certificates’’. So far little or no attention is paid to this requirement from the government.
As Nigerians believe in helping themselves if no help is forthcoming from the government, most of us have started making efforts to get the necessary requirements that will enable us board ships despite the near impossibility of achieving such feat. One of the requirements is the ‘’seaman discharge book’’ which is a prerequisite for boarding.
The discharge book is as important to seafarers as the international passport is to anyone willing to travel abroad. Without the international passport one cannot apply for visa let alone travel. Likewise without the discharge book, cadets or seafarers cannot apply to any company for placement. ‘’But for over a year the said discharge book has been unavailable’’, and the said discharge book is under the purview of the apex maritime Agency NIMASA.
It has become so bad that this unfortunate situation has made rubbish of all the efforts we made to be outstanding in our academic work and has made us a liability in our various families. This also affects the nation which is trying to diversify the economy following the downward trend of crude prices as we represent a variable source of revitalisation of the maritime sector which has the potential of being the mainstay of the economy. We call on the federal government, NIMASA and every agency to please expedite our shipboard training and in the absence of that, provide us the discharge book we need to source for placements ourselves. God bless Nigeria.
Please share till it gets to them. Thank you

Bro.. It is well... Wish this could be in unison with other cadets. You standing alone, they will see it as mutiny...
It is unfortunate that things keep happening like this.

I asked them for a unanimous movement and they were all afraid. I took the stand alone and the discharge book became available in about 2 months. My campaign might not be the reason for it's availability, however, i was glad it garnered over 400 shares on facebook and was on some blogs during that period. Sometimes it's better to stand alone.
