I urgently need to lunch two websites , interestingly it is WORDPRESS which to most webmasters here is relatively simple cms, but i am an absolute new bie in the matter. i have got domain names for the sites, and also got hosting paid with just host dot com. here is my headache.


1. i need to upload a new theme. but dont know how to do this (how do i use the FTP thing?)

2.if i use the default theme can i change it later without adverse effect.

3. if i upload my theme can i costomise it after uploading. (pls do you have any suggestion as to the best theme i can get? adsense and SEO perfected?)

4. How do i put a forum on wordpress? smf on word press?

5. can i put a directory on the site?

free wordpress theme/adsense pluggin then follow the link from
the search result to the website and download it to your flash.

4) You can't put it on the root directory, only to install it on
another directory. because if you do, it will overwrite what
you've installed earlier.

As per the forum i was thinking about puting a forum just like problogger.com has got a vbulletin forun and naijaecash  also intalled smf forum on his wordpress blog. question is how do i do this.

For wordpress forum integration, the best way will be to download bbpress from www.bbpress.org

It is made by the same people who created wordpress and integrating both just happens with the click of a button. Whats more? You can download a bbpress plugin which will allow your wordpress posts be automatically created as new topics in the forum and comments on the posts will be duplicated as replies on the forum.

Alternatively, you can install other board scripts like phpbb and smf. All you have to do is install into a folder e.g. forum that you have created at the root of your website. The forum can then be accessible via www.yoursitename.com/forum. You can also create a subdomain such as http://forum.yoursitename.com to install the board scripts into. You can choose whichever one suits you more.

Concerning altering your theme, it better for you carry out tests and edits on your local webserver as doing this on a live server will be slower and might lead to complications. You can download softwares like xampp or wampserver to set up a local server. Nevertheless, you can always change your theme at any time. For business listing, you can put anything you want on your site. Just search for free business listing scripts on google or sourceforge.net, test extensively on your local server and pick the one that you love the most. You can then create a folder called "directory" on your hosting account, install the script and link to it from your website.

well in the long run which is better? because i want the forum to appear to be part of the site,and if the membership hits like 1 million and traffick skyrockets   which can withstand more.  one definitely must be better. i already downloaded , filezilla though am clueless on how to use it.

If you want the forum to appear to be a part of the site, then you must be ready to do some css and xhtml tweaking. You should only try it if you are comfortable with it.

I'll advise you to go for bbpress if you want the forum to look like part of the site and it is the most easily customisable forum script out there. In most cases, all you have to do is replace the header of the default theme with the header of your website and you are good to go. You would still need to put in some effort though.

well i will prefer smf because of the table structure. no need for it to really blend with the forum, i just wanted a botton on the wordpress that leads to the forum. but then which is better in terms of coping with traffic/ many members. a sub domain (www.forum.the site.com) or (www.the site.com/forum)?

switch411 this is very easy expecially if you have a cpanel hosting that comes with fatanstico you will set up both the blog and forum with justa click within 10 min believe me i have done this for alot of people if u decide to do it the other way round downloading worpress and any other forum software using file zilla toupload you will find it difficult if you need help call me 08056204412 or mail pheyidwebmaster@yahoo.com

hosting cpanel. Because the blog and smf features are of old version.

Now, the question is how can I install with this fantas in my panel and use the latest version

@imrandbest When you are installing with fantastico you would probably install an outdated version of the software. Your options are, 1. install with fantastico thein upgrade 2. manually install the latest version of the software (not so hard actually)
