The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday arraigned three persons, including a housewife, a hairdresser and a graduate on an 88-count charge bordering on forgery and illegal possession of travelers’ cheques.

EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement that “their arraignment followed their arrest at Seme Border, Benin Republic over illegal possession of 166 pieces of Thomas Cook Travellers’ cheques in 100 Euro bills and 49 pieces of American Express Travellers’ cheques also in 100 Euro bill. Ikwuwunna is the prime suspect and leader of the group.

She hails from Imo State and is a housewife and mobilizer of the group.

The suspects, Kelechi Ikwuwunna, 35, Adenike Modinatu Lawal, 33 and Obasi Hope Adanna, 27, were arraigned before Justice Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Babafemi also said in the statement that Kelechi Ikwuwunna admitted sponsoring Lawal and Adanna to Abidjan, Cote D’voire where they were supposed to have changed the travellers’ cheques to CFA. They were, however, unlucky as banks in the French speaking country declined to effect the change. In frustration, they made to return to Nigeria through the Seme Border where they were arrested by men and officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The suspects were later handed over to the EFCC for prosecution.

“Lawal, an hairdresser, who hails from Ogun State, said she was introduced to the business by Ikwuwunna who said it was a money-spinning deal. A South-African international passport number A22684244 bearing Samora Simbiat Winnie but with Lawal’s photograph was found on her. Adanna, a graduate and indigene of Enugu, Enugu State said that Ikwuwunna also introduced her to the business. The court has adjourned the case to October 28, 2009 for trial and also ordered that the suspects be remanded in Kirikiri prisons.”
