It is true that some people are good at negotiating and some people are not. Do you feel that someone is continually taking advantage of you? Or do you struggle to get what you want from people whose help you need, but over whom you have little direct authority? If so, you may need to work on your negotiation skills. You may have the opportunity to negotiate salary, benefits, and other job details with an employer. Negotiation should end in an agreement that meets your goals and your employer’s.
It is inevitable that, from time-to-time, conflict and disagreement will arise as the differing needs, wants, aims and beliefs of people are brought together. Without negotiation, such conflicts may lead to argument and resentment resulting in one or all of the parties feeling dissatisfied. The point of negotiation is to try to reach agreements without causing future barriers to communications.
Effective negotiation is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned. Contrary to what everyone thinks, top negotiators are not hard bargainers and tough-minded personalities. They are not aggressive and demanding. They do not manipulate their negotiating partners into unsatisfactory agreements. The best negotiators are simply warm, friendly and low-keyed pleasant people. They are likeable and agreeable. It just so happened that people feel comfortable agreeing with them.
Here are the Top 5 effective negotiation skills to watch out for:
1. Preparation
Preparation accounts for 90% of negotiating success. Preparation includes determining goals, areas for trade and alternatives to the stated goals. Gather as much pertinent information prior to the negotiation. Ensure all the pertinent facts of the situation are known in order to clarify your own position. The more and better prepared you are prior to a negotiation, the more likely it is that the outcome of the negotiation will be satisfactory for all parties involved.
2. Listen
Listening is a fairly underrated skill in today’s world. A lot of time, when in the middle of a conversation, or trying to conclude a deal we get very excited that it’s so easy to assume what others are saying or finish what others are saying for them. The importance of listening is because it will cause the other party to feel respected and it will build trust (another very important aspect in any negotiation). Listening entails making sure what you’ve heard is actually correct. The more information you get, the better able you’ll be to uncover others’ needs. It will then be easier for you to show how you are able to meet those needs. Communication is a two-way street. It’s not enough to make yourself understood.
3. Verbal Communication
It’s important to make sure your views are clearly understood, to eliminate the chance of potential deal breakers through poor communication. Negotiators must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to the other side during the negotiation. Misunderstandings can occur if the negotiator does not state his case clearly. During a bargaining meeting, an effective negotiator must have the skills to state his desired outcome as well as his reasoning.
4. Win-Win Approach
A lot of times we are so focused on getting what we want in a negotiation, we don’t even think about the other person. This approach focuses on what is termed a 'win-win' outcome where both sides feel they have gained something positive through the process of negotiation and both sides feel their point of view has been taken into consideration. This is the strategy that has the best formula for success. Although this may not always be possible, through negotiation, it should be the ultimate goal.
5. Ask Great Questions
Open-ended, probing questions compel the person to reflect and share more of them. It makes them feel heard and invites dialog and intimate connection. Ask questions that will get them to talk about their interests and their life in a way that provides you with insight into their needs and wants. When you help them gain a new, positive perspective about their situation, they will feel a deep sense of connection with you.
“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.” ~Lee Lacocca
Since people play such a big role in your life, your entire life will go much smoother if you take the time to improve the way you connect with others by developing better communication skills.
If you lack any or all of these skills, don’t be discouraged. Spend a little bit of time each day learning, reading, and practicing essential communication techniques. It may seem difficult to become an excellent communicator, but with practice, you’ll soon discover that you can do it. And who knows? You might even discover that you’re a natural.

A no-brainer here should be being persistent in presenting the same contract but with different variables.

Some are born negotiators just like leaders but it's an art and science than can be learned under a mentor.

understanding the endgame sometimes takes away the thrills of negotiations ... to be a natural, you ought to have negotiated a cs rather than regular birth

Nice topic @op. Did you negotiate with lalastic for fp? Classic win-win.

If you find yourself in a hostile or a potentially hostile negotiation, the following additional tips may bail you out:

6. Negotiations involve a lot of give-and-take. Be open but avoid laying all your cards on the table from the outset.

7. Never negotiate under pressure.

8. In the event of a deadlock, don't be afraid to try the unconventional.

9. When you feel boxed into a corner, ask for a recess to confer/discuss/congregate.

There are exceptions to every rule. The only way to master the exceptions is to study the rules.

yes these work but how about in the open market, negotiating with a trader. lemme tell you one secret we traders do
we make you feel inferior or throw shade at you. we say things like, haaa big girl like you see what you are pricing 1k, see the type of phone you are using self abeg buy it oo coz you big pass am. now out of shame, most of the time the person succumbs. or we say
oga haba why you dey price like this, this shoe price you big pass am now, if to say na another person dey price like this now I for understand but you big pass like this........this style is used a lot in the open market. some just outright abuse you eg abeg no touch that material, you no fit afford am, ask for cheaper ones. out of lack of self-esteem, the customer even though steps out will come back to buy it to prove to you he/she has money.
NB: this works on people with low self esteem or people that like to show off and funny enough majority of Nigerians fall into the category hence it's effectiveness
