LAUTECH resumption may be further than hoped for as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LAUTECH chapter, has officially embarked on a total and indefinite strike.

This was made known yesterday, Monday, September 19, 2016, at a congress of the union. The congress was held at LAUTECH main campus in Ogbomoso.

The chairmen of ASUU, Ibadan chapter and Unilag chapter, Dr. Deji Omole and Dr. Laja Oduja respectively, were also in attendance.

According to the National Mirror, “the chairman of ASSU in the university, Dr. Abiodun Olaniran, said the strike followed the endorsement of the National Executive Council of ASUU which gave its approval to press home the reversal of several hardship facing workers of the institution.”

For close to three months, the non-academic union of LAUTECH has been on strike. They have now been joined by the academic staff.

Dr. Olaniran said the strike had been approved by the National Executive Council of ASSU.

He added that the strike will not be called off until the following requirements are met: a review of conditions of service for academic staff, retirement plans, including pension which is presently non-existent, payment of five months salaries, as well as academic earned allowances.

Also, the strike would not be suspended until the 23 months subvention owed by the two owner-states, Oyo and Osun, are fully paid.

“He maintained that members of the union are Nigerians whose livelihoods are threatened by the current economic downturn, urging the two owner states to live up to their constitutional responsibilities.”
