As a newbie or so you sometimes get confused when viewing your traffic stats. Not all bloggers know the difference between "Hits", "page views" and "visits" and it becomes more confused when they see other bloggers bragging about how many "hits" their site receives monthly.

"Hits"

Whenever a single file that make up part of a webpage is accessed, the website receives a hit. If a page has nothing but static HTML code, every time a visitors' browser visits that page it will result in a total of one hit.

The more the files on the web page the more the record of "hits" if five photos were added to that page, it would result to six hits (one for the html page and one each for the five photos).

"Page Views"

Every time a browser displays a web page it is recorded as a page view in the websites stats, not minding how many files the page might contain.

Most webmasters sell their advertising based on how many hits their site receives each month instead of the number of page views. As you can see here, a single page view can result to dozens of hits.

"Visits"

A visit is recorded whenever a person accesses at least one page on a website within a given session. Regardless if the "visitor" looks at one page ten times within a session a single visit is recorded in the stats.

Finally

Whenever you want to buy advertising for your blog, ignore the number of hits the site you are considering receives, make your decision based on page views.
