Nigeria's oldest University, the University of Ibadan has made it to the top 1000 in the latest University Global rankings.

This new ranking was released by Times Higher Education on their website, ranking the premier university at number 801 on the 2016-2017 list.

A statement on the website said “it is the only global university performance table to judge world class universities across all of their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook”.

Speaking on the new development, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, said the school managed to achieve this feat, despite poor funding from the Federal Government.

According to Premium Times, the Vice Chancellor said adequate funding will be infrastructure and research. On the legitimacy of the rankings.

“The truth of the matter is that the Times Higher Education is one of the elite global ranking bodies.

It is a thing of joy that we have a respectable position in comparison to peer universities in Africa.

This is a message to the Federal Government of Nigeria that we need funding to improve our research and infrastructure to enhance productivity.

We congratulate all faculties, staff and students who have made this feat possible.

The Federal Government should learn to use research output from the University of Ibadan to solve problems facing the country.

We cannot have world class scholars in Nigeria and rely on those who have never conducted researches on our problems to come and solve our problems."

Besides being Nigeria's oldest University, the school is famous for producing titans across various spheres of Nigerians accomplishment, including Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and the late Chinua Achebe.
