CHAPTER ONE

"I'm almost there!" said Nathan and he knew it. His heart pulsed and his stomach tightened as he completed another pull up, his arms were getting weak like they usually did at the stage of the exercise. But he wasn't going to let go. He was going to break his previous record of thirty two straight pull ups in a row. Even if it meant breaking his body. No pain, no gain. He groaned and pulled up again.


"Thirty, thirty one. . . thirty two. . . argghhh” Nathan grunted as he strained his muscles trying to reach his target of thirty four pull ups.


Beads of sweat pooled around his forehead, his singlet soaked at the neck as he hung in mid air contemplating whether to give up or to complete his target. He wanted to break that familiar pain barrier. Going against his body’s wishes, he psyched herself and pulled up two last, hard and grueling times.


“Thirty four. . . arggggh” He almost gave up.


His heart was threatening to burst out of his chest. Maybe it was time to go beyond thirty four. He could do this. He knew he could. He ignored the searing pain at her wrist and biceps.


“Thirty five!” Nathan yelled victoriously as he completed the pull up. He let go of the vertical bar hanging from the ceiling of the washroom and landed on his feet.


Nathan was breathing hard and fast, his body’s reaction to the extended work out he had just subjected himself to. As his breathing and heart beat normalized, he turned his attention to the equipment and uniform lying on the table behind him.


He moved fast. He was already in his black camouflage pants and combat boots so he only needed to grab his shirt. Getting into the shirt, he took the body armor and strapped it on. His battle harness went on next. He wrapped things up by inserting his Executioner revolver into its holster. The Executioner was his favorite handgun. The double action revolver packed a lot of power for its size. It could fire twenty shotgun shells in a single burst, with enough blast to send an adult sized person flying. It was also very accurate. The only caveat was that it had a slow firing rate like a shotgun that had to be cocked after each shot.


He smiled, feeling good about the mission ahead. He was in the zone now, feeling pumped up and energetic. He just needed to get the sweat off his face. It wasn't good if the captain of the squad was already sweating when the mission has not even started. A lot of young and inexperienced soldiers depended on him now for a rousing team talk.


Nathan went to one of the sinks in the washroom, he turned the tap on before splashing water on his face. Today they were going to get the enemy and make him squeal. There was a mirror in front of him. He stared into it, giving it a look of disdain. A pair of dog tags dangled from his neck. The name 'NATE' was written on their faces. The tail of one tag had his full name, Nathaniel Obadike, it also had his age, rank and blood group.


At thirty five he was a handsome, rugged combat veteran with a battle scar under his right eye. Nathan could remember how he got it. It was on a tour in Mogadishu during the Ben Shaw crisis. It was a day he always tried to forget.


His friend Wangui was on the roof of a building scouting the streets for danger as military troops moved in. The streets were lonely with abandoned vehicles and houses that could be hiding place for an ambush.


Nathan ascended up the stairs up the stairs of the building where Wangui perched, thirstingly downing his bottle of water as he climbed. His shift had ended and he was here to take a break. He opened a door, savouring the fresh air as he came out on the roof. Wangui was just there with his back to Nathan, shouldering his rifle and monitoring the street. He was very focused but still managed to detect the presence of Nathan.


"Nate how far, anything for me?"


"Nothing for you except this empty bottle," sad Nathan aiming the bottle at Wangui's bald and vulnerable head. He was about to release it on Wangui when he noticed something.


There was a red dot on the back of Wangui's head, right in the middle. It was shaky.
Nathan wanted to warn Wangui but he couldn't. The Sniper would probably fire on noticing anything out of the blues. So he stayed still. Nathan studied the dot in a vain attempt to save his friend. It filtered through the air in a thin line. The dot moved a bit. The Sniper was steadying his aim. This was his chance.


"Wangui, down!"


"Whaa?"


Nathan knew he had to move fast. He lunged at Wangui, tackling him downwards.


A gunshot rang out.


The bullet missed Nathan by whiskers, passing through the skin of his right eye in a searing heat. Nathan was momentarily blinded, a fiery heat enveloped his right eye. The momentum of his tackle sent them off the roof. Gravity took over.


Nathan didn't know which way was up or down. He just fell. Holding onto Wangui in a death grip. Two more shots rang out. Catching him in the knee. He felt agonizing pain.
They crashed, landing heavily on the hood of an abandoned vehicle.


Nathan took most of the damage with Wangui on top of him. He couldn't move, blood pooled around his eyes, rusted metal tore into his sides. His face contorted in a squeeze. He was in pains, pains that broke the agony barrier. He thought he was blind for a few seconds. Until he saw Wangui.


Wangui's arm appeared in the sunlight, pulling him out of the wreckage. They were still vulnerable to the sniper and needed to get to safety. They quickly took cover behind the vehicle. Nathan couldn't see clearly. But he knew that the troops were safe, taking shelter in their hiding places. They only had to restrategise to take care of the sniper.


That was five years ago. He recovered fast. That incident earned him the medal of the purple heart and a promotion. More importantly, it bonded him with Wangui. They became brothers. Brothers in arms.


He felt like punching the mirror. He hated mirrors because they made him to see things, to see scars.


Nathan was taken out of his reverie when he heard the sound of retching coming from the stall behind him. He looked back to see a young soldier coming out. Wordsworth had been in the special forces for a long time despite his age and was a good man to have.


"Shawn sir," He saluted.


From what Nathan could see, Wordsworth looked pale and sweaty. Wordsworth must have been in the toilet for too long. The thought of it made Nathan laugh.


"Wordsworth, you didn't eat any of that hot chicken, did you?"


"The mission, sir.."


"What about it? Another day, another run. The enemy is always out there," said Nathan cutting in before Wangui could even finish. He didn't get Wordsworth and didn't want to. He wasn't going to let Wordsworth sit out the mission. Wordsworth was one of his best men.


"I never had anything to worry about before." said Wordsworth. His shaky hand pulled a photo out and showed it to Nathan. It was a young mother with a newborn in her arms.


Nathan was disturbed, he felt annoyed. He knew what Wordsworth was getting at. He couldn't believe Wordsworth wanted to leave now. This mission was highly important. They spent weeks training for it.


"He's three weeks old. I'll be seeing him for the first time next leave."


Nathan looked at the picture, then at Wordsworth. His eyes went distant. He thought about his own past. His own family, his dad and his mum. It was a long time ago since he last saw them. Even though he contacted them through e-presence calls. His eyes hardened again. He could see that Wordsworth was clearly unfocused. What if something happened to Wordsworth during this mission? How would he live knowing that he could have prevented it. His mind was made up. He was going to let Wordsworth go.


"You're off the mission,"


"Sir?"


"That's what you want, right?"


Wordsworth didn't argue.


Nathan handed him back the photo. "If your head's with them, then you're no good to me."


Wordsworth nodded.


Nathan stepped closer to him, now one very mean captain. "One thing, though. You step off this one, you're out of Special Forces. I'm going to find you a nice desk and chair back at the base. How do you like to be regular staff?"


"I... I guess I can live with that."


"Then you should."


Wordsworth nodded, grabbed his kit, and leaves. Nathan's hard eyes watch him go, then a slight smile creased his lips. He had a new goal now, It was time to go brief his team about the mission and give them that rousing team talk.
