PRESS BRIEFING ON SOME ACTIVITIES OF NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS, AKWA IBOM STATE COMMAND, FOR THE PERIOD OF 3RD QUARTER OF 2016 TILL DATE: BY COMMANDANT OBIAJULU OBIAGELI.

The Command in its determination to curb the menace of Vandalism & Illegal Oil bunkery while protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructures among other numerous mandates, has effected several arrests in the area, some of which have been successfully prosecuted while some other Cases are undergoing prosecution in competent Courts.

So far, as at the end of the 3rd Quarter of this year, 2016,till date not less than Twenty-six (26) Persons have been successfully prosecuted and convicted by the Courts in about Eight (cool Cases bothering on vandalism and illegal oil bunkery.

NAVY HAND OVER CASES
Two (2) out of all the Cases transferred by the Nigerian Navy to the Command have been successfully prosecuted with Ten (10) Persons convicted, while other Cases are still undergoing prosecution in Court.

ARMY HAND OVER CASES
Also, in a very recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court, Uyo, on the 28th September, 2016, Six (6) Persons were convicted in one of the Cases transferred to the Command by the Nigerian Army with Three (3) vehicles among other exhibits used for illegal oil bunkery forfeited to the Federal Government, while some other Cases are still in Court.


NSCDC CASES (ARRESTS)

- No of cases won – 5 (out of these 4 is on illegal bunkry and one is on power cables vandalism).
- No of Persons convicted – 10
- No of Vehicles forfeited – 4
- No of Motorcycles forfeited – 5
- No of Tricycles forfeited - 2

Similarly, over Twenty (20) vehicles involved in illegal petroleum activities have been forfeited to the Federal Government. Some of the forfeited vehicles were part of exhibits transferred from Sister Agencies like the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy respectively.

We have also placed some filling stations used for illegal oil activities under surveillance with One (1) of them under seal by a Lawful Court order for being used for illegal purposes.

We have also recovered Electric High Tension Cables of about 1,500metres long from vandals whom we arrested and successfully prosecuted and have handed them over to Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.

We have also in our custody Two (2) vandals of Electric High Tension Cables who were arrested recently by our Men, while they were cutting and removing the Cables along Udo-Udoma Avenue, Uyo. Suspects have been paraded and will soon be arraigned in Court.

Also arraigned was the suspect arrested while illegally conveying adulterated petroleum product with his company’s truck. Prosecution is in progress.

PRIVATE GAUARD COMPANIES ACTIVITIES

No of companies under seal – 2
No of companies undergoing registration – 2

MAJOR ACTIVITY HELD

The command facilitated a tourism and security forum with theme “Boasting security Consciousness in tourism and Hospitality Industry in Akwa Ibom State”. 478 hotel operators and 14 domiciled Private Guard Companies in the state participated

ANTI FRAUD ACTIVITIES

The command succeeded in clamping down job scam syndicate that succeeded in defrauding five hundred and thirty (530) unsuspected job seekers. A total sum of one million, one hundred and ninety five thousand naira (1,195,000.00) was recovered for the victims. Mean while, legal steps are in progress to bring the suspect to book.

ANTI HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The command in conjunction with Nigeria Television Authority, Uyo was able to re unite an strayed six year old girl with her family.

NATIONAL ASSETS AND CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION

The Corps mounted and is still mounting Surveillance on gas pipelines situate in sixteen (16) Local Government Areas of the State and is part of the Security arrangement of some major oil companies in the State.
Our men are engaged in the effective protection of the facilities of the Nigeria Communication Commission.



GENERAL SECURITY

THE Corps is part of the joint security arrangement of the State Government aimed at sound protection of lives and property.

INTELLIGENCE AND INFORMATION GATHERING

The Command engaged powerfully in proactive Intelligence Information gathering to the delight of the citizenry and especially the State Government.
It exchanges useful intelligence information with other sister Agencies in the State, and also synergizes accordingly.

PEACE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION

The Command has succeeded in mediating and resolving disputes between individuals and communities using alternative Dispute Resolution method. These were achieved through our Peace and conflict Resolution Unit comprising of well trained and informed Officers and Men.

The successes recorded so far were made possible by our Commitment which was propelled by the immeasurable support of our amiable Commandant General as well as the support enjoyed from Sister Agencies and the public at large. While the Command will not relent in its mandate as well as the fight against vandalism and illegal oil bunkery activities, the general public is further enjoined to avail us with useful information that will help unmask the cankerworms digging the nation’s economic grave.
