Description

To mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day celebration, the governor of Kaduna state Nasir el-Rufai has pardoned three prisoners in the state.
The prisoners who had earlier been convicted for different offences were granted amnesty and released.
Announcing the pardons, the governor said: “As is customary, we mark this day of liberation with a gesture of compassion.”
He also said the compassion followed recommendations from the advisory council of the prerogative of mercy.

“Following recommendations from the Advisory Council, I have therefore approved the release of three prisoners based on guidelines which include the convicts attaining the age of 60 with good conduct and convicts suffering from ill-health likely to lead to death. I have exercised powers conferred by Section 212 of the Constitution and endorsed the release orders for three convicts,” el-Rufai said.
Two of the convicts – Mohammed Usman and Hassan Saidu were pardon on good conduct of over 60%, they also had a little part of their sentence left.
The third convict, Zaro Dickson was pardoned on account of ill health.
Dickson suffers hypertension and diabetes, the state said.

Meanwhile, el-Rufai also urged Nigerians to be confident that the current economic crisis – recession – will come to an end in a short time.
He also admonished Kaduna state residents to uphold peace and harmony and shun any form of criminal activities or self-help and personal vendetta.
In the same vain, the Bauchi state governor, Mohammed Abubakar pardoned 22 prisoners in the state.

The prisoners who were serving various jail terms were released on Friday, September 30, on the directive of the Bauchi state governor.
The governor said Nigeria has witnessed 17 years of uninterrupted civil rule despite economic and political challenges that faced it.
He said his administration is dedicated to providing basic amenities to better the life of Bauchi residents.

Stating that Bauchi state is the safest in North East and has played host to internally displaced persons from other neighbouring states, the governor said his administration would continue to give adequate attention to security and protection of lives and property.
