I will advise you go with his suggestion. Kano is a big state and most often than not those locals will always know you are a stranger and take advantage of you. After camp you can rationalise your spending because you would have been given orientation as to how the environment works.

Akwa Ibom State.
The NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Akwa Ibom State is situated close to the Akwa Ibom International Airport. Along the Uyo-Okepedi Expresssway. Coming to the Camp from other parts of Nigeria you will have to get to Uyo first. From Uyo to the Camp is easy. You can hire a cab from Uyo to the Camp, or you can board a vehicle heading to Okopedi or Oron, ask the driver to stop you at the NYSC Camp.
