Why Do State Interfere With Local Government? by Arkison: 2:03pm On Oct 20, 2009
Ever since I started paying attention to Nigerian politics, the interference of State Gov'ts and their House of Assembly in Local government administration is becoming too alarming.

Local governments officials are suppose to be elected, but why do we always read Gov's sacking elected chairmen and councillors? Isn't that undemocratic? Isn't that unconstitutional? Do state Governors and their house of assemblies have power to sack elected officials?

I am not conversant with Nigerian politics and their laws, but local government administration in UK is at the heart of the community. The coucils build houses, libraries, schools (primary and secondary schools), recreactional facilities, waste management and disposal, maintain roads etc. . .

Because most people in and out of government, i.e. most of us, do not know where their duties and rights start or end, it only takes a brave one of them to test the constitution in court and get things straighted out but who would when the governors handpicked and installed them there in the first place?
