"WHAT TO NOTE WHEN SELECTING TOMATO VARIETY TO GROW*

The choice of tomato variety to grow is based on fruit quality, adaptability and reliability,
resistance/tolerance to diseases and pests, quality (firmness), plant growth habit,
availability and suitability to the growing conditions, the specific market (preference
by customers), and the planting time.

The choice of the best variety to plant is critical for good yields. Since there are
many varieties of tomatoes, you need to choose those that will meet your needs and
are suited to your climate and each growing season and environment. No single variety will combine all the best features.

*SECRETS TO WATERING VEGETABLES*
TIP FOR THE WEEKEND.

Watering vegetable plants may seem like such a simple task, but believe it or not, how and when it is done makes a huge difference between success and failure in the garden or farm.Hydrating needs certainly vary based on location and local weather. But no matter where you live, there are a few simple watering rules that can help your vegetable plants to better health and productivity.

Here is a look at some of the most important watering skills:

1. Watering too often.

Let’s start with the most common issue when watering vegetable plants. Over watering! Believe it or not, more damage is done to plants by having too much water, rather than too little. Watering plants every day, or even every other day throughout a season can cause big issues for a plant’s long-term health.

For starters or beginner farmers, plants that receive excessive watering fail to develop deep roots. Their roots stay near the surface because of the constant supply of water. And unfortunately, shallow root system creates a weak and feeble plant.

In addition, without digging their roots deep, plants are unable to find the needed minerals and nutrients they need to survive and thrive. Last but not least, it leaves the plant extremely vulnerable to wind, storms, or even a short dry spell.

2. Knowing signs of too much Water.

How do you know if your plants are getting too much water? The easiest and most obvious sign is a yellowing of the leaves. This is a direct cause of the roots being over-hydrated. When this happens, they are unable to take in nutrients, and the result yellow leaves.

Yellowing of the leaves is a sure sign too much water is getting to the plant. Unfortunately, many farmers and gardeners see the yellowing of leaves and worry the plants need more water, leading to even more trouble.

3. Supplying the right amount of water.

How much water is the right amount of water? Under moderate temperatures, most vegetable plants require about an inch of water per week. That equates to about 1/4 to 1/3 of a gallon of water two times per week, or the equivalent of 1 inch of rainfall. A bit more if the temperatures soar, or you live in an excessively hot / dry area.

Water new transplants daily or every other day for that first week or two until their roots have adjusted to the soil. Then allow them to adjust to the longer watering cycle to develop those all-important deep roots. Once a plant has become established after transplanting (usually within a week or two), they only require deep watering every 4 or 5 days.

4. Water Low & Slow

When growing moisture loving crops like cucumbers and tomatoes, it is important that they can soak up the water when it is applied. That means watering at a slow and steady rate for best absorption and not with a blast of water.

Watering high with a hose or a fast sprinkle can actually cause several issues. First, the force of the water can knock off blooms, which unfortunately, means less future vegetables. High watering also increases evaporation, meaning your plants receive less water over time.

Drip tapes is one choice that work wonders for watering only the root zones of plants. But simply using a hose and watering low around the plants will work just fine too.

5. Water in the Morning or Early Evening

Never water during the middle or “heat” of the day! Watering the garden as the sun shines bright and hot creates a whole array of issues for vegetable plants in the garden. Plants are at their maximum stress level in the middle of the afternoon. And watering during this period actually piles on the stress level as opposed to helping relieve it.

Watering in the afternoon can easily burn and scorch the foliage and blooms of plants. Water droplets that land on leaves are heated up by the sun, causing damage and more stress.

In addition, the heat and sunlight evaporates the water quickly. The result is that the critical root zones of plants receive less of the water applied. The optimum time to water a garden is in the early morning. Not only is the sun low, but the temperatures are cooler as well. This allows the plants to soak up water easily, and prepare for the heat of the day ahead.

So get out there and water those vegetable plants, but of course, at the right time and with the right amount!

Water is life.
HAPPY WEEKEND.

*BENEFITS WOOD ASHES IN FARMING ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO INTEND TO GO INTO ORGANIC FARMING*

Wood ashes can be used to benefit crops in three ways:

1. As a fertilizer,
2. As a soil amendment,
3. As an insect repellent.

1. *Fertiliser*
As a fertilizer, wood ashes are a good source of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and aluminum.

They typically contain less than 10% potash, 1 % phosphate, and trace amounts of micro-nutrients such as iron, manganese, boron, copper, and zinc.

(Wood ashes do not contain nitrogen.) The exact chemical make-up of ashes varies according to wood type (hardwood ashes contain higher potassium levels than softwood ashes).

If compared to a commercial fertilizer, wood ashes would probably read about 0-1-3 (N-P-K).

2. *Soil Amendment*
Wood Ashes can be used to Raise pH, it contains approximately 25% calcium carbonate and behave like a liming agent when added to your soil (raises the pH).

Because ashes are soluble in water, they can quickly correct pH levels when added to acidic soil (pH less than 5.5).

If you're unsure of your soil's pH, don't add wood ashes to your soil until you have it tested. Raising the soil's pH above optimum levels can adversely affect the health of your plants.

When pH levels rise above 7.0 (neutral), important nutrients like phosphorus, iron, boron, and potassium start to chemically bond to the soil and become less available to plants.

3. *Insects repellent*
Because of its ability to absorb water, wood ashes can also be sprinkled around plants to prevent attacks from snails and slugs.

Once wet, the ashes lose their effectiveness and must be reapplied. To avoid causing chemical burns to your plants, sprinkle small amounts of ashes evenly around the base of the plant, and rinse off any that comes in contact with the foliage.

*Tips for Safe Application*

Soils that are slightly acidic (pH 6.0 to 6.5) should be able to safely handle an application of 9kg of ashes per 1000 square feet annually without changing the pH.

This is the equivalent of 2.7kg of ground limestone per 1,000 square feet. If you're trying to raise the soil's pH, you'll need to add more.

Wood ashes act quickly once added to the soil. If you use them, have your soil tested regularly (every two years) to make sure the proper pH levels are being maintained.

Wood ashes intended as a fertilizer or used to correct pH should be applied in the raining season or worked into the soil several weeks before planting.

Apply the ashes to the soil evenly and avoid piles and mounds, which can cause salts to build up in the soil.

Never use ashes near acid-loving plants like potatoes, and blueberries.

*Handling & Storage*
Wood ash is a strong alkaline (like bleach) and should be handled with caution. Wear eye protection, gloves, and a dust mask while handling it, and avoid scattering ash when windy.

Make sure ashes are completely "burned out" and cool before collecting them for use.

To reduce the risk of fire, store them in a metal container with a secure lid.Ashes from charcoal grills should never be used in the garden due to the chemical residues left by processed charcoal.

The same is true of ashes obtained from cardboard, and ashes from wood that has been pressure-treated, painted, or stained.

All contain harmful chemicals that could potentially contaminate soil and inhibit plant growth.

*Wood Ashes for Watermelons*
wood ash applied in watermelons helps reduce the problem of blossom end rot.

*STEPS FOR PEST AND DISEASE Contro CONTROL IN TOMATO FARMING*

This is key in tomatoes farming. There are several pests and diseases that can wipe out your entire farm.

1. Select disease and pest tolerant seed varieties, specifically Hybrid F1 types.

2. Management begins at the nursery level and continues into the field.

4. Nutrition; strong plants (like humans) will have higher immunity to infections and infestations. Plant with NPK, top dress after 3 weeks with Calcium & boron rich fertilizers. After six weeks apply potassium rich fertilizers.

5. Scouting: This is the practice of interaction with your plants. This helps a farmer notice any disease and pest challenges early and fastens remedial action.

6. Spraying : We do it after every 4 days using a combination of pesticides, fungicides and nutrient rich fertilizers.

*FUNCTIONS AND FERTILIZER DEFICIENCY IMPACT IN FARMING*

We're are going to look at various nutrient deficiency symptoms as related to growing most tree crops and Vegetables. We'll be pointing out one on a daily basis.

*NITROGEN*

*Functions*
It makes leaves greener which is a sign of good health status
It supports leave and shoot growth
It increases the number of cherries per branch.

*Nitrogen deficiency*

Becomes first visible on young parts of the plant
Leaves turn pale yellow and become thin
Later older leaves turn yellow and are shedded (often on dense fruiting branches first)
Leaves near the stem and in the lower part of
the canopy become yellow first, other leaves are affected later.
Slow development of new leaves and shoots
Branches could die under extreme deficiency.

*WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RED, YELLOW AND GREEN BELL PEPPER*?

Most people think that color is the only difference between red, green, orange, and yellow bell peppers.

But, if you peel the back layers of the pepper, you will find out that there are plenty of differences between the different colored bell peppers.

The difference between red, green, orange, and yellow bell peppers?

Despite their varied color, from a scientific standpoint, all bell peppers originate from the same genus and species of plant, scientifically known as Capsicum annuum.

The difference in color that you see in bell peppers is due to the use of different cultivars.

This means that cultivars, which is a fancy word for cultivated varieties are plants that have come from removing them from an existing plant rather than from seeds.

So on any given bell pepper plant there may exist an array of colored peppers dependent upon many factors.

The seed source of all the bell peppers are the same, which in this case is Capsicum annuum, but they have different characteristics depending upon the special variety of the plant.

The two major factors responsible for the difference in a bell pepper’s color is its time of harvesting and degree of ripening.

Although it’s true that in most cases a green bell pepper usually matures into a yellow/orange bell pepper and then grows on to gain red color, but this is not always the case.

However, it’s a fact that yellow, orange, and red bell peppers are always more ripe than green ones. This is why yellow, orange, and red bell peppers are costlier than green bell peppers, because they require more time in the ground before they can be harvested.

Therefore, it’s important to note that all of the bell peppers come from the same species of plant, and their different colors are achieved by following a natural process, not by any artificial method.

However, apart from their unique colors, each differently colored bell pepper has a unique array of nutritional benefits.

1. *Green bell pepper*

Green bell peppers are picked before they have fully matured and therefore these peppers are often classified as “unripened” among all other peppers.

Because they’re prematurely harvested, they have a slightly bitter flavor and will never have the sweet taste of their red, yellow and orange counterparts.

Despite being harvested at an immature stage, green bell peppers have several vital nutrients.

This bell pepper has plenty of potassium, which is important for promoting muscle contraction apart from regulating blood pressure.

Green bell pepper is also well-known to have vitamin C, which aids in the growth and repair of tissue, improves immunity, guards against infections, and helps in prevention of cancer.

The vitamin A you get from this bell pepper enhances your lung function, improves your eyesight, and strengthens your immune system.

2. *Red bell pepper*

Red bell peppers are considered “fully ripened” or matured bell peppers, because they are picked at the later stages of maturity.

They often have a sweet, almost fruity taste. While the nutrients in red bell peppers are same as that in green bell peppers, the quantity of nutrients is higher because these peppers get more time on the plant before harvesting.

In addition to other nutrients the red bell pepper has lycopene, which is an antioxidant pigment known for preventing certain types of cancer such as breast and prostate cancer.

Nutrients such as zeaxanthin and lutein present in red bell pepper is known to help prevent cataracts and muscular degeneration.

Red bell peppers also have eleven times more beta-carotene, one and a half times more vitamin C, and ten times more vitamin A than green bell peppers.

3. *Yellow/Orange bell pepper*

Orange and yellow bell peppers are harvested at the midpoint of maturity and therefore fall in between green and red bell peppers on the “ripeness” spectrum.

These bell peppers lack the bitterness often associated with green bell peppers. Although they contain same type of nutrients as that in red and green bell pepper, their quantities are different.

The amount of nutrients in yellow/orange bell pepper are more than that in green peppers, but less than that found in red peppers.

That’s because green peppers are less mature and red peppers are more mature than their yellow/orange pepper counterparts.

The amount of vitamin C is nearly double in yellow/orange bell pepper when compared to green bell pepper.

However, the quantity of beta-carotene and vitamin A is one-third as that of green bell pepper.

*Conclusion*
Bell peppers, like most other vegetables, retain highest nutritional value when they are consumed in raw form.

And all bell peppers, of all colors, are suitable for raw consumption. Now that you know the difference between red, green, orange, and yellow bell peppers, it’s time for you to grab yourself some of these crunchy rainbow veggies and make them a vital part of your favorite dishes to get a proper nutritional boost. Did reading this change your color preference for bell peppers?

*INTRODUCING THE ORANGE FLESHED SWEET POTATOE VINES*

Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is a special type of biofortified sweet potato that contains high levels of beta-carotene.

Beta-Carotene is an organic, red-orange pigment abundant in plants and fruits.

Beta-carotene is what gives OFSP an orange color and is converted to Vitamin A in the body after consumption to provide additional nutritional benefits.

Biofortification enhances the nutritional value of staple food crops by increasing the density of vitamins and minerals in a crop through either conventional plant breeding, agronomic practices or biotechnology.

Examples of these vitamins and minerals that can be increased through biofortification include provitamin A Carotenoids, zinc and iron.

*Why do we need the raised bed and how?*

In order to provide a proper medium for higher yield and higher growth of plants, giving a specific shape to the soil raised beds are recommended.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE RAISED BEDS

1. Plow and harrow (2-3 times) by an animal, drawn equipment or mechanized.

2. Ley out the field using stakes, measuring tape and string.

3. Prepared raised bed one-meter width make canals for drainage. (raise the bed depending on soil type and session (10-20cm high in dry season and 30-50cm high in rainy season)

4. Do soil test for NPK and pH is below the recommended pH for specific vegetables (optimum pH 6.0 - 6.5 ) consult expert for the right application.

5. Add well-decomposed manure or any locally available organic fertilizer (3kg per 2m of bed)

6. Flatten the top surface.

*HERBICIDE GUIDE FOR 2022 FARMING SEASON*

Use of herbicides is a chemical control method of controlling weeds on different crops and has its merits and demerits.

Herbicides are classified into two classes namely

*SELECTIVE HERBICIDES*
These are herbicides when applied to the field they only affect the weeds even if when they are applied on both the crop and the weeds, the crop will not be harmed(Atrazine is one of such)

*NON SELECTIVE HERBICIDES*
These herbicides when applied to the field they affect both the weeds and the crops so caution and careful application should be observed. The farmer should apply the herbicide on the weeds only when using non selective herbicides. If not applied properly the farmer will loose his or her crops, so extra care should be taken to avoid any damages on the crop.

On herbicides we have got pre emergence herbicides, these are herbicides which are applied before planting or before the crop has emerged (Force up is an example)

Herbicides we apply after the crop has emerged are called post emergence herbicides, farmers should know all these when it comes to chemical control of weeds

*READ CAREFULLY AND UNDERSTAND ALL THE LABELS AND INSTRUCTIONS ON ANY PACKAGE OR CONTAINER OF THE HERBICIDE BEFORE YOU APPLY THEM*

*IF YOU ARE NOT SURE SEEK ASSISTANCE FROM YOUR AGRIC EXPERTS* *WE ARE AVAILABLE TO GUIDE YOU.CONTACT SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957(WHATSAPP)*

✍ *Tips on how to Plant Bell Peppers in the field*:

Before planting, incorporate up to two handfuls of well composted manure like poultry manure, rabbit, cow cured into each hole meant for planting pepper alternative method of applying manure stated below.

Transplant your peppers and place or space them between rows of 70 cm, and 50 cm between plant in a row.

Cured organic fertilizer (not fresh) can be incorporated into the soil a week or two before planting to allow for mineralization of the nutrients. This may be supplemented with NPK 15:15:15 about three weeks after planting.

Cover the transplants with soil and then water gently.

Spray the seedlings with a fungicide and insecticide immediately to keep off pests and fungal diseases.

Weed the field at an interval of at least 2 weeks to prevent competition with weeds.

Mulching the pepper is another way of minimizing the rate of weed growth.

*INTRODUCING THE VANILLA PLANT*

Vanilla is much more than a delicious flavor ingredient in our baked goods; it may also have a number of important benefits, possibly including its potential ability to reduce acne, improve hair growth, speed healing, reduce inflammation, prevent chronic diseases, protect the heart, and much more.

Vanilla is an extremely popular ingredient in many different culinary preparations around the world, and the scent of vanilla is unmistakable to most people.

This flavoring is derived from the orchids of the Vanilla genus, which bears fruits that are shaped like pods. These pods can range in size from 5-22cm in length and are considered of a higher quality when they are larger.

However, these pods must be hand-picked at precisely the right time to ensure that the seed pods don’t pop and that they are properly ripe.

Harvesting the pods is a time-intensive process, but there is a global demand for vanilla in many different forms, not only for its use in food preparation but also in natural healing.

Vanilla is rich in antioxidants, which can help prevent the breakdown of cells and tissues around the body, and stimulate the body’s natural regrowth.

Furthermore, the potentially antibacterial nature of this remedy means that it can protect your immune system and lower stress on the body, making it much easier to recover from injury or illness.

3. *It reduces Inflammation*

For centuries, vanilla in numerous forms has been used to soothe inflammation throughout the body. This is particularly effective for inflammation of the liver, which can occur for numerous reasons, especially if you are a heavy drinker.

Vanilla is often included in hygiene and beauty products because of its many effects on the hair and skin. 5. *It prevent Acne*

For people who regularly struggle with acne, it can often feel like a losing battle. Fortunately, the antibacterial nature of this beneficial flower may make it a powerful ally in the battle against pimples, as it can eliminate the underlying infection and speed up the healing process of the skin.It can even reduce the appearance of scars from a particularly bad bout of acne.

6. *It Soothe Anxiety*

Although some people remain skeptical of aromatherapy, some of the best natural remedies can have an effect simply through our olfactory sense.

The smell of vanilla, in fact, is known to directly impact the brain and induce calmness. Therefore, the extract can be one of the best and most accessible remedies for anxiety and chronic stress.

7. *It aid in Weight Loss*

8. *It alleviate Respiratory Conditions*

When you are battling a cough, cold, or respiratory infection, any sort of analgesic or anti-inflammatory substance can be helpful.

Vanilla extract can help to coat the throat when mixed with warm water and provide an anesthetic effect to the throat. The potentially antibacterial properties can also help eliminate the underlying infection or illness while easing coughs and sore throats.

9. *It promote Healthy Digestion*

There are a number of ways that vanilla has been used throughout history to optimize digestive function. The scent of this herb is known to calm feelings of nausea, while vanilla-infused herbal tea can soothe inflammation in the gut and prevent vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and stomach upset.
