There are two ways to refill a customer's gas cylinder, the PNEUMATIC and the AUTOMATIC dispensing system.

For the pneumatic dispensing system, the cylinder is place on a digital scale and the scale is adjusted to its zero limit so as to get the exact amount of gas already in the cylinder and the exact amount of gas needed to refill. Then the nozzle of the filling system is fitted to the valve of the cylinder and the system is stopped as soon as the pre-determined amount of gas is reached.

For the automatic dispensing system, the exact amount or quantity of kg or litres is pressed on the dispenser while the refilling nozzle is already inserted in the cylinder. In this way, the system automatically stops dispensing once the pre-determined amount of gas is reached.

ln the automatic dispensing system, the refill automatically stops when the pre-determined amount is reached while In the pneumatic dispensing system, you have to end it yourself when you have refilled the gas cylinder to your customer's desire.

Only trained technicians or people with knowledge on how to refill a gas cylinder should be allowed to refill, to minimize or prevent accidents from happening while refilling.

How well do people use cooking gas in Nigeria?

Nigeria is the world's sixth largest producer of Liquefied Petroleum Gas also known as Cooking Gas but has the lowest utilization of LPG in sub-Saharan Africa with a potential to produce 5 million metric tonnes of cooking gas yearly and a national usage of merely 350,000 tonnes.

Mrs Nkechi Obi (Executive Vice-Chair of Techno Oil Ltd) said "LPG or cooking gas users find it extremely difficult to refill their cylinders. Sometimes, they travel as far as 200km before they can access facilities to refill their cylinders". She added "Our desire is for government to provide incentives for investors to build refilling plants and terminals and DPR to incorporate LPG plants in all mega stations within reach of communities, so that people can refill their cylinders with ease and at an affordable cost"

Mr Dayo Adesina (President of NLPGA) said with a population of over 160 million people, Nigeria ought to consume 5,000,000 tonnes of LPG/cooking gas every year rather than a 350,000 tonnes. He maintained that the gas that would be processed into cooking gas was abundant in Nigeria as the country has more gas than oil, adding however that consumption could only rise to 5,000,000 tonnes per annum if firewood and other dirty and poisonous fuels were discouraged.

Steps TO Clean Your Cooking Gas Griller

The first thing is to make sure your cooking gas cools off before you clean. Apart from burns which may affect your hand, cleaning a hot appliance can damage the appliance if water slips into sensitive parts; therefore make sure it is totally cold before starting the cleaning process.

After the grill has cooled off, systematically disassemble the parts, this is to ensure you clean each part in isolation of others. Cleaning them together is not advisable as it may not have the expected outcome you desire.

Clean the knobs and handles. These parts are the contact parts of a cooking gas grill and they are frequently soiled and oiled. Use a degreaser spray after cleaning with a dry rag. Give it at least ten minutes and then clean them off. The major function of the degreaser spray is to destroy any germ and bacteria buildup that may turn-up.

One of the things to know about cooking gas business is "How is cooking gas measured?". The measurement of cooking gas plays an important role in the cooking gas retail business because error when measuring the amount of gas needed to refill a gas cylinder could lead to loss in your business or complaints from your customers or both. Cooking gas can be measured in litres, kilogrammes and tonnes.

1 kilogramme is equivalent to 1.75 litres

1 metric tonne is equivalent to 1000 kilogrammes

1 metric tonne is also equivalent to 1750 litres

Now you know the correct measurements of cooking gas so you can know for sure when you are being cheated if you are at the purchasing end and for cooking gas retailers you now know exactly what your customers want.

It is important to know how to handle a gas cylinder. Knowing how to handle a gas cylinder helps to reduce the number of injuries or accidents that occur at a gas station. It is also good to ensure that your employees are well trained on how to refill a gas cylinder.

FOR SAFE HANDLING OF GAS CYLINDERS:

- Always place gas cylinders in a vertical position unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer.
- Restrain cylinders securely to prevent them from falling.
- Always ensure that all cylinder valves are tightly closed.
- Ensure that the valve is always protected by a valve cap to prevent further damage if the cylinder is dropped.
- When loading or unloading the cylinders, never drag, drop or roll the cylinders.
- Always ensure that cylinders are kept in a well ventilated ware house with regards to the manufacturers ambient temperature standard.
- Ensure that cylinders are placed on wooden pallets and not on a bare floor.
- Use trolleys and cylinder hand trucks when moving the cylinder around.
- Fasten securing bars on the trolley while moving the cylinders.
- Prevent direct physical contact among the cylinders in storage.

Now you know how to handle a gas cylinder and the safest way to move cylinders around, so the next question is "How do you refill customer's gas cylinders?".

The challenges of setting up a cooking gas business?

Aside the initial cost of the equipment, a major set back is finding the right location for building a profitable business. A group of investors from blue chip companies stated that they had the cash to set up the business, but finding a location that will be certified for operations by the regulatory bodies and close enough for the consumers to have access to buy gas at all times.

Our Solution:

We have partnered with major service stations across Nigeria to help solve that problem, a profitable location that will be certified by the regulatory bodies will be sourced by us for the investor to ensure a smooth running of the business.

THE MARKET OPPORTUNITY
There is a huge market for LPG in Nigeria as consumption grew from 36,000 Tons in 2005 to about 350,000 Tons in 2015 with a market project of 1,000,000 tonnes in in the next four years.
The major driver to achieve this growth is the constant availability of gas in the retail market, therein in lies the business opportunity for entrepreneurs to harness and develop the Nigerian LPG Market to meet its consumption potentials. If a domestic consumer is assured of LPG when and where S/he needs it, S/he would willingly convert from firewood, coal or kerosene to LPG.
With the present emphasis of the government on the development on the gas sector, the supply situation is improving significantly and more households are definitely changing to LPG.

THE GASPRENEUR BUSINESS SOLUTION
Developed economies thrive on small businesses to spur economic growth, which is why we have created this scheme to build businesses across the LPG value chain. This is a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs and Corporate Bodies to partake in the growing gas industry.

KEY OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHEME
The Gaspreneur Scheme is designed to dev shall therefore provide detailed insight on how to start a cooking gas business, construction of LPG plants, how to get relevant statutory licensing to commence operations, all year business support.

Cooking is simple when you know exactly where everything is and when you are positive that the utensils and appliances are clean.

One cannot have a “clean” kitchen without having an “organized” kitchen.

Having an organized kitchen is essential to having a beautiful cooking experience, especially when preparing your meals with cooking gas.

It can be frustrating when you realize that you are short of an important ingredient, half way through working on the entire recipe.

Unfortunately, kitchens are usually the busiest rooms in any house where family members are always in and out; constantly sorting through

pantries and cabinets. Older food items get pushed to the back in the refrigerator where it might rot behind the newer items.

It is a herculean task to keep the kitchen neat and organized at all times which is why it’s important to do a thorough clean sweep at least

once in every two weeks.

Nigeria is as well-known, one of the oil producing countries in the world. Apart from that, it has been known to derive a larger percentage of

its revenue from oil. Petroleum products also globally are an aspect of economy that you can never go wrong with. Now, of all petroleum

products, gas seem to be the least estimated. As a matter of fact, statistics conducted some years ago showed that the only about 5%

consumption potential of LPG was used.

But presently, we are seeing changes in the consumption of cooking gas. Most people are seeing the usefulness and convenience. One of the

menaces of the Nigerian society is lack of electricity. And although, most people would prefer to rely on electricity in their kitchens, that

preference is on realistic in Nigeria. A lot of these people therefore substituted with kerosene. But it as expected, they discovered cooking

gas, which is arguably a better alternative to kerosene because not only does it cook food faster, it is also ultimately cheaper.

How to Start A Cooking Gas Business in Nigeria

Land:

In starting up a cooking gas business, the aspect of land is crucial simply because of the environmental and health implications of

cooking gas. Therefore, in accordance to the requirement of the DPR (Department of Petroleum Resources), the position of the plant must be

at least 15 meters from any building containing flammable materials, for instance, residential buildings, filling shed among others.

Capital and Labour:

There is not a business that you don’t need capital and before starting a cooking gas business you would need to buy all

the equipment and those are also some of the things the DPR would look out for. Apart from the DPR needing to see this, you cannot really

function without this equipment. Some of the equipment necessary include; the testing pool, valve screwing, electronic carousel, mechanic

carousel, electronic scale, mechanic scale, and many more.

Gas ovens are the best alternative to electric ovens.

Cooking gas oven is the way to go for those who want a clean and pleasant cooking experience Cooking Gas ovens have long been used in

commercial settings. However, the numerous benefits of cooking gas over other forms of energy makes it an attractive choice to

homeowners.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES TO CONSIDER:

1) Energy Efficient

A cooking gas oven heats up and cools down faster than an electric oven. Warming begins as soon as you turn on the cooking gas.

Equally, cooking will stop just as soon as the gas is turned off. Far less energy is consumed in the on-off process unlike an electric oven.

You need to allow the electric coils in the oven to heat up sufficiently before cooking actually begins.

2) Lower Costs

Because of the energy efficiency of cooking gas, it costs less than electricity. If you do a lot of baking, an oven fueled by natural gas may

make a better choice for you. Overall, you are bound to meet higher costs on electricity bills with an electric oven, which utilizes more

energy to operate.

3) Low Maintenance

Most gas appliances have low maintenance. Electric ovens usually have more frequent maintenance needs. Replacement of faulty oven parts

becomes necessary more often with electric than gas ovens. This allows you to cut down on overall home maintenance costs.

Cooking gas also known scientifically as liquefied petroleum gas, is perhaps one of the most popular fuels for cooking apart from kerosene

and it is gradually usurping the position of kerosene as the preference of people is shifting towards gas. The reason for this is not far-

fetched. Cooking gas although not cheaper than kerosene, is a cheaper option at the end of the day because it lasts longer and cooks food

faster, thereby saving fuel.

A lot of people now liken using kerosene to be penny wise, pounds foolish because at the end of it all, one would end up spending more

money than what one was trying to avoid by not using cooking gas.

However, in spite of what most would consider a good reason to change fuels, some people are worried about the safety of cooking gas.

A lot of debate has been recurring on whether gas or kerosene is safer to use.

Gases are obviously more inflammable than kerosene. And that explains why they burn hotter and cook faster than kerosene. But the

truth is that no fuel is without its own hazards. The trick is finding which works best and managing it in a safe environment. The best

method of dealing with fuel is abiding strictly by the safety codes.

The good news gas cylinders are so safe they rarely explode, the only way they could be a problem is if there is a leak (which is rare)

because of the thickness of the gas cylinder. And in most cases, the safety of using cooking gas is largely based on you.

CONSUMER SAFETY AWARENESS

ALWAYS:

· Ensure work on fixed LPG installations whether new or being modified is carried out by a kiakia gas fitter

· Keep LPG appliances and fittings in first class condition via regular servicing, checking regularly for deterioration in performance,

signs of corrosion and minor leaks.

· When any LPG appliance or burner fails to ignite immediately, turn off the gas supply and ventilate for at least three minutes to allow

any gas to disperse before attempting to reignite.

· Ensure there is adequate ventilation when using LPGappliances (especially unflued appliances) to allow fresh air for consumption and

removal of burnt gases

· Treat any cylinder that has ever been filled as a full cylinder, even if you believe it to be empty. Only cylinders purged with inert gas

can be once again considered empty.

NEVER:

Tamper with the safety valve or other cylinder fittings

Use undue force to open or close the main cylinder

valve.

LPG Safety Procedures

Leak suspected - Location Uncertain

· Check the entire system for ANY indication of gas leak, such as smell or hiss.

· Test with soapy water solution, which will bubble at any point where gas escapes. NEVER use a match, flame or plain water to test for a leak.

· If the leak has been indoors, fully ventilate the room before further use of appliance.

· Do not interfere with any part of a fixed installation just call us 08140005500 instead for assistance

Leak Detected –

· If possible, stop the leak by shutting the cylinder valve.

· Ventilate the area thoroughly until the air is clear.

· If its not possible to stop the leak, remove the cylinder carefully to a safe outdoor location.

· Keep the leak uppermost so that only vapour and not liquid escapes.

· Keep hands and face clear of any stream ofescaping liquid

· Keep possible ignition sources at least 20 metres away until cylinder is empty. These sources could include open fires, non-flameproof electrical appliances, camera flash, telephone, radio, vehicle engines, and any other equipment that can generate a spark.

How LPG is Produced?

For many years when there was no use for LPG, it was counted as a wasted product while refining crude oil, thus, for long, it was called a

by-product. The production of LPG does not entail manufacturing because it already exists in another product.

So, it could actually be referred to as a by-product but a useful one. LPG is processed via two distinct methods. It is either processed by

cleaning natural gas of impurities such as various hydrocarbons which include the methane, ethane, ethene, propene, isobutene, butadiene,

pentane and pentene, and fluid through a plant frequently called stripper plant, this process. Or it could be gotten by refining crude oil. When

crude oil is pumped into a distillation tower to pass through distillation, different products are extracted at different stages of the refining.

The distillation power has been programmed to extract these products that include petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG among others at certain

temperature degree. The LPG gotten from crude oil is usually called ‘associated,’ which simply just translates to associated with oil and that

not gotten from crude oil is called, ‘non-associated.’

Challenges of Starting a Cooking Gas Retail Business

Your sales is highly dependent on the economic situation of your region

If your business is sited in a region where the standard of living is poor and the residents use more of

firewood and kerosene stove, then your business is already a failure from the start. So try to site your

business in a positive economic area with working class residents. You can also target restaurants,

fast food outlets, etc, as they will be needing a steady supply of gas.

Business Intelligence Update:

Most of the energy used for domestic cooking in Nigerian homes comes from traditional forms of energy like HHK (kerosene) which

accounts for 65-70% of the energy consumption in Nigeria, LPG(cooking gas) stands at 25%, while other fossil fuels like firewood and

coals accounts for the remaining 5%.

Now lets do some basic mathematics from the post above

Annual Consumption of cooking Gas stands at 300,000 MTPA (300million KG)

25% of annual consumption= 300million kg (527million litres)

Now imagine if we can switch another 25% of our population from House Hold Kerosene to cooking gas in the next 36 months

50% of annual consumption= 600million kg (1.54billion Litres)

Considering the negative impact of kerosene on the economy (subsidy) and the environment, it's important for us as Nigerians to look

inward and invest in this emerging sector to grow the naira and reduce the emission of green house gases to curb global warming

let's join hands to make Nigeria a cleaner place and become millionaires in the process.

What is the future of cooking gas in Nigeria?

- Nigeria possesses tremendous oil and gas potentials and has had significant capacity additions in the last few years. The oil and gas

industry is rapidly evolving not only as a catalyst to national development but also helping to meet global demand.

- Consequently, Nigeria is well positioned to meet the global oil and gas supply needs sustainably while ensuring ongoing wealth creation in

the domestic economy.

- Although the recent unrest in the Niger Delta is a challenge. Equally, high level dialogue which is ongoing, signals hope for peaceful and

sustained resolution. There has been significant progress through key initiatives such as the local content drive, increased local participation,

establishment of skills acquisition centres etc.

Popular Questions I have been asked

1) HOW EXPENSIVE IS IT TO OWN A COOKING GAS BUSINESS

The honest truth is cooking gas business is not as cheap as they make it seem because it requires a lot to meet the right standards, attain the right documents and bring in the right profit but is also not as expensive as they make it seem because with 3million in the account you can own your LGP SKID PLANT. There are different LPG SKID PLANTS for different prices to suit your pocket. By the way we all can not be like Davido so if you don't have 30 billion in the account, remember Wizkid, one of the most celebrated artistes in the world started from the streets of surulere.
