ABUJA—CHAIRMAN, House of Representatives Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity, Francis Onyewuchi Ezenwa, has lamented that Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has subjected the people of Owerri to torture and horror by refusing to evacuate the refuse dump at Douglas road Owerri, the state capital.

The lawmaker who represents Owerri Federal Constituency of Imo State in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja said that the governor who swore an oath to protect the lives and property of the people had through his action, exposed the people to serious health hazard.

Ezenwa who had mobilised for the evacuation of the refuse dump in Douglas road, only to find out that some persons suspected to be working for the state government stopped the evacuation said governor Okorocha had denied his constituents dignity to life.

He contended that Okorocha’s action was because the people had opposed the governor’s plan to relocate the Eke Ukwu market which he said was an ancestral market to another place. Ezenwa said there was no justification to the alleged dehumanisation the people were subjected to.

According to him, “I sponsored the clearing of refuse on Douglas road and this is borne out of concern for my people and the devastation to the environment the refuse had caused.
“The governor stopped my effort as a way of punishing Owerri people because of the issue of relocation of Eke Ukwu market and it got to a point that clearly, an epidemic was breaking out and somebody had to intervene.”
