President Buhari has ordered the closure of retail store giants, Shoprite and Next Cash ‘N’ Carry.

The mega stores have been given a seven day ultimatum to correct their errors or face outright ban in country.

The president’s stance was made public by the Nigerian Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA.

The warning was handed out to representatives of the two superstores at a briefing in Abuja on Friday.

Speaking unbehalf of the president, to the DG of NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, the stores violated certain safety rules.

“Recently, we carried out a survey of likely GMO products and we have been able to have some collections, some materials that we call GMO suspects.

“We invited the superstores for them to understand that some of their products need to be properly ascertained selling.

“Our interest lies in all imported products that may contain genetically modified materials.

“There is a law in place regarding all GMO’s

“We will not want any segment of the society out of ignorance to act in manners that will infringe on the law.

“If they have any GMO food in their stores, they should withdraw them from their shelves within seven days.

“The NBMA will not hesitate to shut down those stores found selling GMO products.

“We will not want to see any GMO food in your stores. We urge you to comply with this Act.

“We have taken samples, which we are analyzing. This information is not peculiar to only the superstores.

“We are not threatening anybody, we are just telling you the consequences of dealing in GMO products if found in these stores.

“Within the next seven days, we believe you will withdraw from your shelves all foods that are derived from genetically modified organisms.

“Please, it is an advice and this advice is not without a legal backing.

“So we urge you to withdraw all GMO foods from your shelves and formalize your dealings by obtaining permits.

Whatever happened to the word ; warn.

Would it not have been better to write ; president Buhari warns so so and so company to stop selling products derived from genetically modified organisms.
Why must you sound like an alarmist all the time?
Do you derive any joy from it?

Buhari need to be shown as a no-nonsense sheriff,
hence the alarmist language adopted by many

Unfortunately a good 90% (i'll bet) of Nigerians are blissfully ignorant and to compound matters.. direly illiterate. They would rather believe what their pastors and imams tell them or better yet, defer to Telemundo or Nollywood for cogent advise on life-changing matters than use their god-given sense to think things through.

The corn you eat today was not the type present in West African regions until the colonialists combined them with pest resistant and more durubale ones from their own homelands, today Nigeria is a big name in Yams.. where did you think the source came from, Tomatoes, greens etc we just wake up and eat something we know not the history of and when science tries to do the same thing it did more than 50 years ago with resounding success.. some herbalists and food nutritionists (pure scammy pseudo-science).

The reason we are where we are today is self-evident.. we have allowed stark illiterates and crudely-bred buffoons to lead us. results are too clear to disagree with.

See the enlighten one, so you don't know that things like that ought to be regulated still, even in the Western world there are reservation concerning GMO n now that the process is more advance unlike the case of the corn u made mention of, those kind of simple cross breeding are done in our research institute here.#thegovernmentisnotsodumb

pls don't be confused! there's a difference between crops produced as a result of extensive and assorted plant breeding techniques and genetically modified crops. most of the high yielding crops we have are not GMO's because there was no outright genetic manipulation of the crop.

Gbam even in the west concerns have been raised about the safety of GMO products and all GMO products are labeled GMO... the procedure for GMO heavily uses antibiotics in labelling genes there are fears this will lead to serious bacteria resistant strain of antibiotics. ... this is one of the fears people have for GMO

Please don't get it all mixed up. I may not want to go into any technical discussion with you on GMOs and how carcinogenic some of them might be but any ethical company MUST obey the laws - rules and regulations of its host community/country.
If they default, the hammer should be brought down on them. We have laws too in Nigeria you know.

Good one from Buhari! Not a fan though.
