Nigerians are cashing in on the weak naira to increase exports of mainly agricultural products to boost their foreign exchange earnings. Data obtained by BuisnessDay from Nigeria’s two main cargo-handling companies shows a significant 39% increase in the volume of exported cargoes through Nigeria’s airports.

The two air cargo handling companies; Skyways Aviation Handling Company Limited, SAHCOL, and Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, Nahco Aviance (NAHCO) handle100% of all export and import cargoes going through Nigerian airports.

Data obtained from SAHCOL shows that while air cargo imports declined by 27.2% to 6,822,499kg in the first half of 2016, cargo exports handled by SAHCOL rose 84% to 2, 560,760kg within the same period.

Similar data obtained from NAHCO shows that air cargo imports also fell 24% to 21,858,976Kg, but cargo exports rose 25% to 5,241,269Kg within the same period.

Cumulatively, exports from the two main cargo-handling companies were up 39% in the first half of 2016.
Exports of Palm Oil, Vegetables (Fresh/Dry), Melon (Egusi), Ogbono Seeds, Cashew Nut, Ginger, Garlic, Zobo Leaves, Yam, Plantain, Pepper, Cocoa, Bitter Cola, Cola Nut, Garri, Dried Fish, Yam Flour, Cassava Flour, Plantain Flour, Coco Yam, mainly accounted for the increase according to a report by Chibyke Global, an air freight forwarding company in Lagos Nigeria.

“The high exchange rate has reduced importation but it is also encouraging Nigerians to export agro-allied products to other countries” Tayo Ojuri, industry expert and CEO of Aglo Limited, an aviation support service company told BusinessDay.

The recession seems to be resetting the brains of Nigerians; if only food prices could come down a little to reduce the hunger, then this recession would surely be the best blessing that has happened to Nigeria lately.

I have said it several times. To get to a successful land, you are definitely not going to appear to people as a normal person from the onset.
therefore, if this is the result of Buhari being sick in the brain as wailers claim, he has better continue to be "sick" upstairs until he leads us to that successful land.
Any right thinking Nigerian knows that the certificateless Buhari is doing something better than the other PhD student.

Everything have advantages and disadvantages
In fact, now is the best time for Nigeria to turn the economy around because our goods will be cheap to another country, according to my supervisor in exchange rate, but it's a pity Nigeria has nothing to export.

Now, buhari's wife do not believe in him anymore, why should Nigerias now believe in him

Recession is a chance of finding great inspiration through innovation.

Reason why I don't envy those sitting online here and on Facebook crying their eyes out and whining at every ache their lazy body gets.
When they eventually wake to reality, time and chance will not be their friends.

This is very good. But it looks as if a few Nigerians are reaping the benefit of this new opportunities. It is time for our youth to understand farm produce, processing and exporting as a way to increase their earning power. It will be nice if some youth also go into research on things to export and how to go about it and charge consultation training to those that are interested in the trade.

Lastly, it is time for every Nairaland to study AGOA (Africa Growth and Opportunity Act) and to visit their office in Abuja. Here, all the agricultural products that American government wants to buy from Nigeria are listed. Sadly, we have not be able to meet up to 20% of what American are willing to buy from us. Time to seize opportunity friends!

Just thinking.. Kuwaiti dinar is the highest valued currency in the world, while crude oil accounts for over 90% of the country's export, it also lives mainly on imported products.

How is that? And why are we (naija) here?

He has not put reasonable policies in place. If not for the policies setup by the previous administration for agriculture, this recession would have been a death sentence even to those who are exporting now and to farmers.
I do not support any of the parties but bubu should sit up and work more on export policies to favor the naira more.
All politicians are the same. We should be grateful to God for blessing our country with natural exportable items

Of course they do. just google AGOA. You will see. Other sahara Africa countries have taken advantage of this opportunity but us. I got to know about it around 2007 when I was assisting a social science lady on AGOA project. I realised people are even paid by Nigeria government to promote this knowledge. sadly, they just don't do anything to orientate the populace.

Its encouraging but it has its downturn! Have you wondered why palm oil is too costly in your local market? Middlemen prefer exporting than selling at the local market. They fix the price according to the prevailing black market exchange rate
