President Buhari And The Nigerian Paradox by EVarn(m): 11:02pm On Oct 25, 2016
Its been about one year and 5 months since the President Buhari led APC administration took over power, but as fortune would have it,he seem to have come to power at a time when international price of crude oil has crumbled, thereby depleting national resources and fanning the flames of ethnic/sectarian violence.
We would recall that President Buhari came to power riding on the back of the "Change" mantra and promising a vigorous anti-corruption drive that he explained would refocus the Nigerian system back on track. However, things seems to have gone South-hill for him; after barely a year in power,Nigeria entered into recession, fuel price spiked to an all time high, power generation crumbled as low as zero(a first even for Nigeria), inflation and mass retrenchment/in payment of salaries has greatly eroded the goodwill this administration enjoyed initially.
But the focus of this writeup is not to point out the obvious, but to look deeply into why exactly Nigeria seems the way it is and also to perhaps proffer solutions.

Recently,we have heard many analyst and prominent Nigerians from different quaters singing the song of diversification and restructuring. Now,the principle of economic diversification is very sound and should be the next way forward, but we must realise that the effects of diversification are long term in nature. Also, this government seems to be battling with shortage of funds and therefore finding difficulty in putting in place some policies.
But on the issue of restructuring, I find it interesting that those calling for restructuring just woke up at this time when Nigeria is in recession and therefore cannot undergo such massive shift in governance.Weren't these the same people there all these years?,didn't they see the need to restructure before now?,why now?.
Curiously,I find it quite interesting that the idea that Nigeria should go back to regional system of federalism is being floated around.Have we considered the implications of such shake-up?,or do we just decide to copy the UK because it has worked for them?,the same way we copied the US.
I believe what Nigeria needs for rapid development is massive empowerment of the local governments, and possibly weakening the powers and duties of the federal and state governments.Let the local governments have more resources, and let the federal and states be regulatory. This way, development will penetrate rapidly to the grassroots.
But bringing up a regional government seems infeasible: considering our political dynamics, every region would always seek more power at the centre, and the sense of patriotism will decrease as each region harbours it own agenda that may hamper that of other regions in the federation.
In conclusion,I think what Nigeria needs is urgent diversifications and accountability. Even without restructuring,we will make progress, albeit it will be at a slower pace.

I totally agree with anybody who says Nigeria deserves restructuring, its long overdue. Though I will start with Nigerian needs reorientation more than anything else in this period.
We have lost our way and it will take something greater than democracy to see us home.

Have we suddenly developed selective amnesia about the reasons why the regional governments were abolished in the first place?

No we have not forgotten why the regional government was abolished.
Bring back regionalism, and we won't still achieve anything , we have become too individualistic in this country, what we need is a greater national spirit.
We need to start doing things because its the right thing to do, not because we are going to get rewarded or because someone can't punish us ,if what we do is wrong.

Yes,the absence of moral values seem to be our fundamental problem and the root of corruption itself.
