Mummies of humans and other animals have been found on every continent, both as a result of natural preservation through unique climatic conditions, or intentionally preserved corpses for religious or cultural purposes.

In addition to the well-known mummies of Ancient Egypt, deliberate mummification was a feature of several ancient cultures in areas of South America and Asia, as well as numerous other.

Here we feature some unique mummy discoveries from around the world.

The baby mummies of Qilakitsoq, Greenland.

His little face still stares upwards, as if eternally waiting for his mother. From the moment he was discovered, the little Inuit baby captured hearts with his photograph plastered on magazines and news stories around the world.

When he was first found, he was believed to be a doll, but it was soon discovered that it was actually the body of a six-month old baby boy.

He was buried alive with his already dead mother presumably because there was no one left to care for him.

The small Inuit baby was found along with a two-year-old boy, and six women of various ages, who were buried in two separate graves protected by a rock that overhung a shallow cave.

The bodies were naturally mummified by the sub-zero temperatures, dry, dehydrating and winds. They are the oldest preserved remains ever to be found there.

Tollund Man, Denmark.

Tollund Man is the naturally mummified body of a man who lived during the 4th century BC, during the period characterised in Scandinavia as the Pre-Roman Iron Age.

He was hanged as a sacrifice to the gods and placed in a peat bog where he remained preserved for more than two millennia.

Today, the face of the Tollund Man is as preserved as the day he died. The look upon his face is calm and peaceful, as though looking upon a sleeping man.

This 2000-year-old body of a hanging victim is among the oldest of the dead the world has seen.

Discovered in 1950 by Jutland farmers in the Danish Peninsula, his body looked so fresh that he was mistaken for a recent murder victim, not a man who belonged to the Pre-Iron Age.

A final autopsy revealed rope marks around his neck, concluding that he had been hung to death a common occurrence in the area.

Remains of vegetables and wild seeds were found in his stomach, which were probably the contents of the Tollund Man’s last meal.

Lady Xin Zhui.

When talking about body preservation and mummies, people all over the world think of Egypt and the mummified bodies of Pharaohs, such as Tutankhamun.

But how many know that the world’s best preserved bodies actually come from China? The Lady of Dai, otherwise known as The Diva Mummy, is a 2,100-year-old mummy from the Western Han Dynasty and the best preserved ancient human ever found.

Just how this incredible level of preservation was accomplished has baffled and amazed scientists around the world.

Xin Zhui, the Lady of Dai, died between 178 and 145 BC, at around 50 years of age. The objects inside her tomb indicated a woman of wealth and importance, and one who enjoyed the good things in life.

But it was not the precious goods and fine fabrics that immediately caught the attention of archaeologists, rather it was the extraordinarily well-preserved state of her remains that captured their eyes.

Ötzi the Iceman, Germany.

Ötzi the iceman, who was discovered by hikers in the Alps, border between Austria and Italy in 1991, was originally believed to be the frozen corpse of a mountaineer or soldier who died during World War I.

Tests later confirmed the iceman dates back to 3,300 BC and most likely died from a blow to the back of the head.
He is Europe's oldest natural human mummy and, remarkably, his body contained the still intact blood cells, which resembled a modern sample of blood.

They are the oldest blood cells ever identified. His body was so well-preserved that scientists were even able to determine that his last meal was red deer and herb bread, eaten with wheat bran, roots and fruit.

Oetzi rests in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in northern Italy today and holds the title of Europe’s oldest natural human mummy

Ramesses The Great.

Regarded by many historians as Egypt’s most powerful pharaoh, Ramesses II reigned for six decades (c. 1279-1213 B.C.), lived to be over 90 years old and is said to have fathered upwards of 100 children.

His body was originally entombed in the Valley of the Kings, as was customary for a pharaoh, but ancient Egyptian priests later moved it to thwart rampant looters.

In 1881, Ramesses II’s mummy was discovered in a secret royal cache at Deir el-Bahri, along with those of more than 50 other rulers and nobles.

In 1974, archeologists noticed its deteriorating condition and flew it to Paris, where it was treated for a fungal infection.

Before the journey, Ramesses II was issued an Egyptian passport, which listed his occupation as “King (deceased).”

Based on the 7-centimetre deep cut found on his throat, historians speculated that he was murdered by his sons.

The Sleeping Beauty of Capuchin Catacombs, Italy.

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are located in Sicily, Italy.

In the 16th century, the Capuchin monks of Palermo discovered that their catacombs contained a natural preservative that helped mummify their dead.

One of the most famous mummies is that of a two year old girl, Rosalia Lombardo who passed in 1920.

Rosalia was placed in the catacombs when she died in 1920.

Her body is so well preserved that she looks as if she were just sleeping in her glass coffin, hence her nickname “Sleeping Beauty”.

The secret for her excellent state of preservation was revealed a few years ago, when a hand-written memoir of the embalmer, Alfredo Salafia, was discovered.

This memoir recorded the chemicals that he injected into Rosalia’s blood. These chemicals were formalin, zinc salts, alcohol, salicylic acid, and glycerin.

It has been suggested that it was the zinc salts that were most responsible for Rosalia’s amazing state of preservation.

The wet Mummy.

This Ming dynasty mummy was found in a water-logged coffin on a construction site in China in 2011.

Researchers speculated that she had been submerged for nearly 600 years, making her body ultra-resistant to the terrestrial elements that would normally have decayed it.

Inca Child Mummies, Argentina.

Well initially this might look to you like any normal girl being treated by a doctor, the girl in the photo is not any normal living girl but the mummy of a 15 years old child who has been dead for about 500 years.

She was drugged with chicha and coca leaves and left to die as an offering to the deities by the Inca.

There she remained frozen in a cross-legged position until her discovery in 1999.

Archaeologists had found two other girls with her, perched high on Mt.Llullaillaco.

Scientists say that her clothings, shoes, and organs are intact and its as if she had died just a few weeks ago.

From testing the samples of her hair they could determine the type of diet she was on before her death.

This lead to the discovery that the Incan fattened their children before killing them.

Months or even years before the sacrifice pilgrimage these children were given diets which were those of the elite, consisting of maize and animal proteins.

Judging from the condition of the body, it is believed that she was drugged and left to die in the mountains. It would not have taken much time for her to die due to the high exposure.

The Incan high priests took their victims to high mountaintop for sacrifice. As the journey was extremely long and arduous, especially so for the younger victims, coca leaves were fed to them to aid them in their breathing so as to allow them to reach the burial site alive.

Upon reaching the burial site, the children were given an intoxicating drink to minimize pain, fear, and resistance, then killed them either by strangulation, a blow to their head or by leaving them to lose consciousness in the extreme cold and die of exposure.

Why Only Children?

Children were selected for sacrifice because they were considered to be thepurest of beings.

They were chosen for their beauty and possibly nobility. According to Inca beliefs such children were to serve as guardians to their villages from the heights of the mountains joining their ancestors and honoured in death.

The children wore shoes or slippers and dressed in colourful clothing elaborately decorated with medal, bone and cords.

More than 100 precious ornaments were found to be buried with these children inthe burial site.

They were loosely wrapped in shawls and were seated crosslegged as they would have fallen asleep after being drugged.

Third image, another found on the mountain with her.

Thousands of miles from civilization, on the frozen Canadian arctic island of Beechley, lies a tiny European graveyard, the last remains of Sir John Franklin's failed expedition of the arctic.

Three of Franklin's sailors John Torrington, John Hartnell, and William Braine were early casualties in a sad opera of starvation and death.

They were buried by their comrades in 1846, all of whom would eventually succumb to the very same elements in a death walk of cannibalism and madness.

Hoping to find the legendary shorter Northwest Passage a trade route to the Orient, providing direct access between Asia and North America.

A hundred men set sail to the New World on two ships. They neither reached their destination nor returned home, and history was quick to forget them.

138 years later, anthropologist Owen Beattie led an expedition to exhume these bodies to ascertain the true cause of the expedition's failure.

Upon opening the graves, the scientists were simply baffled by what they found: three perfectly preserved bodies who stared back at time, literally.

The report was that the two ships, the Erebus and Terror has been locked in ice for over a year and a half and 24 men had died during that time, including Sir John Franklin. Because they were running out of provision, the other crew decided to abandon ship and trek south.

This message was found along with a couple skeletons of the sailors who had not made it.
