In what seem like a forced hand at restoring the nation’s economy rather than finding a lasting solution to the problems of the Niger Delta region, Buhari and so-called leaders of the Niger Delta held a closed-door meeting.

Nigerians were made to understand that the meeting was for both parties top sit down and discuss ways forward for the Niger Delta region. The question that will be running in the mind of people of the Niger Delta region, is how sincere are both parties to solve the problems of the common man in the region.

Well from my point of view, I see a government being pushed to find a way for oil production to continue without any more hindrance, so as to boost the already dwindling economy. And on the other hand, the so-called Niger Delta leaders in the meeting are same old, so-called leaders of the Niger Delta who have grown exceedingly rich positioning themselves in various representative positions in the region. And who have not made a meaningful impact in the region in their years serving as Niger Delta representative? So what hope is left for the people who are represented by people they do not trust to bring the needed dividend to the common man?

While it is agreeable that the Federal Government of Nigeria have never been fair enough to the region, and with no complete sincerity in positioning the region to what it is supposed to be. The Niger delta on its own has had the problem of adequate and sincere representative, as they are so selfish and only think about enriching themselves at the detriment of their people.

The first step in solving the problem of the Niger Delta is sincere representative for the people, who will see that the resources given to the Niger Delta are utilized properly in developing the region and not to enrich a few. Then also fight for control of the resources in the Niger Delta, and also our environmental rights. With the kind of leaders presently representing the Niger Delta in various front, one is left to wonder the impact someone like Ken Saro-Wiwa would have made in the present day democracy.

It is unfortunate to say, but if anything positive is going to come out from that meeting, it will be that some leaders will become richer and the government will succeed in running unhindered oil production in the region and will boost the economy of the country.

But for the common man in the Niger Delta, there is no hope of that this meeting will benefit them in any way.
