President Muhammadu Buhari met with key leaders
of the Niger Delta region yesterday as planned. The
meeting was part of efforts by the Buhari
administration to foster development and lasting
peace in the region.
The Niger Delta Leaders presented a 16 list demand
to the president. They include:
1. Relocation of administrative and operational
headquarters of major international oil companies to the Niger Delta Region.
2. Clean-up of other communities in the
Niger Delta affected by oil spills besides
Ogoniland.
3. Review amnesty program to provide jobs to the
people already trained.
4. Economic development and empowerment of the
region.
5. Inclusive participation in oil industry and
ownership of oil blocks.
6. Implementation of Brass NLNG and
fertiliser plant project, and a review and
update of the national gas master plan.
7. Fast track key infrastructural projects in
the region like the East-West road.
8. Reduction of the increasing military
presence in the region.
9. Prompt take-off of Maritime University.
10. Contract for security surveillance and
protection of oil and gas infrastructure
should be given to the local communities.
11. Increase the restructuring and funding
of NDDC.
12. Expedite action on fiscal federalism.
13. Resettlement of Bakassi indigenes.
14. Improvement of power supply.
15. Meet the immediate needs of internally
displaced persons.
16. Strengthen the Niger Delta Ministry
