VEGETABLE FARMING

Vegetable farming is one aspect of farming in Nigeria that is capable of bringing quick cash to a would-be farmer. The presence of vegetables in daily diet has been strongly associated with reduced risk for some forms of cancer, heart diseases, stroke and other chronic diseases.

**Spinach grows within 21days before harvest. Ewedu grows in about one month, Shoko grows in about 21days**

FLUTED PUMPKIN (Telfairia occidentalis) is popularly known as Ugu in Igbo and across Nigeria. It is by far, the most consumed vegetable of any kind in Nigeria. Apart from cooking, pumpkin vegetable has been known to increase the volume of the red blood cell when consumed fresh, without being cooked.

BITTER LEAF (Vernonia amygdalina) is a vegetable used for preparing the popular Bitter leaf soup. It is also known as Onugbu, Shiwaka & Ewuro by the Igbos, Hausas & Yorubas in Nigeria. It has medicinal and healing properties. Vitamins in Bitter leaf include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vit.B1 and Vit.B2. Some of the many uses of bitter leaf include Stomach-ache, Skin Infection, Diabetes, Liver diseases, Loss of Memory, Prostate Cancer, General Weakness, Stroke, Pneumonia, Insomnia, Arthritis etc.

WATER LEAF (Talinum triangulare) is known as Gbure, Inene, Alenruwa, Nte oka. The leaves and stems of this plant are consumed as vegetables. This leafy plant is considered to be a rich source of vitamins and proteins. It helps in the prevention of heart diseases and stroke and also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial functions. It is the perfect remedy for weight loss and is used for treatment of diabetes

JUTE LEAF (popularly called ewedu among the Yoruba, ahingbara in Igbo and rama in Hausa). Ewedu is probably the most popular vegetable among the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria. The main vitamins in this vegetable are A, C and E. Ewedu is rich in fiber, therefore regularly intake of the leaves help to control blood pressure, cholesterol build-up, diabetes, lowers the risk of asthma, cancer, and also prevents heart disease.

SHOKOYOKOTO is the Yoruba name for Celosia Argentea, an indigenous plant with leaves high in beta-carotene and folic acid. The name sokoyoyoto is the plant’s name among Yorubas in South-Western Nigeria. It literally means “the vegetable that makes your husband’s face rosy. Shoko is considered to be an aphrodisiac. It is sometimes used as dressings for boils and sores. It is great for digestive health!
