While food is very essential to the human body, kitchen on the other hand is a very important part of the house. We all love food, which explain how much we spend on the appliances we use in preparing them. But how well do you know those who invented those appliances we use in our kitchens? Would it not be fun if we go through the list of the inventors of some of the most essential kitchen appliances and the year they were invented? Believe me, this post is really interesting and I would really love it if you can stay glued to the end.

1. Kerosene Stove

In an average Nigerian kitchen, this is a very essential appliance. Kerosene stove is the most common appliance in an average Nigerian home. It was invented by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist from Stockholm, Sweden in 1892.

2. Gas Cooker (Gas Stove)

This is next in terms of popularity to kerosene stove. However, the gas cooker is faster, reliable and efficient than the former. It was invented by Sir Benjamin Thompson in Massachusetts, United States in 1790. The flaw in his invention was however perfected by an Englishman, James Sharp, from Northampton in 1826.

3. Kazan Pot

Do you know the name of the pot used by "akara" sellers you always see at most t-junctions? It is called "kazan". Although it is not an essential kitchen appliance, however, I decided to add it because we have smaller versions of it which are used in some Nigerian homes. This pot was invented by the Turkish nomads. Its year of invention is however unknown.

4. Sand Casting Iron Pot

This particular pot is well known to the party goers, most especially people like me that love going to the caterer spot (confession time). This pot was invented by Abraham Darby in 1707. He hailed from Dudley, United Kingdom.

5. Electric Oven

The electric oven is another popular kitchen appliance. It is used mostly for baking. It was invented by William Hadaway in 1897. Although, it should be noted that the earliest record of oven was traced to Alsace, France in 1490.

6. Stainless Pot

The first stainless pot which is quite common in the kitchen nowadays was invented by the Polar Ware company in Wisconsin, United States in 1927.

7. Microwave

This kitchen appliance is particularly useful, most especially to those who have to leave their homes so early to beat the traffic to work. Microwave oven was accidentally invented by Perry Spencer, a United States military officer during World War II. He developed this appliance using radar technology.

8. Kitchen Cabinet

We know how tidy how kitchen is when we have this very important appliance fixed. But have you ever wondered how it came to be? Or do you think it was just an idea that started by a carpenter down the street (respect to every carpenters out there)? Well, the kitchen cabinet was invented by Lillian Moller Gilbreth, an industrial psychologists from California, United States in the 1920s'.

9. Non Stick Frying Pan

Although the first known frying pan was invented in Mesopotamia with no actual date, however, non stick frying pan which is the best and most known frying pan today was invented in 1954 by a man called Marc Gregoire. This frying pan is relatively known not to burn food.

10. Refrigerator

If you are the cold drink "addict", well, you have to know who is bailing you out all these years. Refrigerator was first developed by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow, however, he did not perfect this plan. In 1805, Oliver Evans invented the first refrigerator that did not use water, but vapor to cool products (Read More).

11. Deep Freezer


The deep freezer which is commonly used to make home-made ice block was invented in 1876 by a German scientist known by the name Carl von Linde.

12. Electric Stove

This appliance which is the most cost-saving among the cooking appliances in the kitchen was invented in 1859 by George B. Simpson from the United States.

13. Bread Toaster

I am very sure you love toasted bread, if you don't, you are really missing a very delicious food. The toaster you use in making your toasted bread was invented in Edinburg, Scotland by Alan MacMasters in 1893. Before then, toasted bread was made by placing ingredients on sliced bread and then placed on a metal frame which was also called "long handled toasting fork" and then placed near fire.

14. Slow Cooker

Otherwise known as the "crock-pot cooker", this appliance was invented by Irving Naxon in 1938. It was reported that Irvin got inspired by a story his grandmother told him about a delay she had when preparing a Sabbath meal.

15. Cooking Mixers

Cooking mixer was first invented in Maryland, United States by Ralph Colhier in 1856. Its electric version was patented in 1885 by Rufus Eastman, also from the United States.

16. Blender

Have you ever thought of a quickie method of blending when preparing your egg, sauce or any other soup meal? Maybe you so hungry and you just want to get your pepper, tomatoes and other ingredients blended together as soon as possible, the wonderful appliance which allows you to do the blending, called blender, was invented by a Polish-American, Stephen Poplawski in 1919.

17. Can Opener


Ironically, can opener was not invented until about 50 years after can was invented. The can opener was invented by Ezra J. Warner in 1858. However, it should be noted that the can opener which is commonly in use in our homes today was invented by William Lyman in 1870.. The former's patent was rejected by people due to its rough edges and poor design.

18. Rice Cooker

This is one of my favourite appliances as it help get my rice done asap. And for the record, I love rice. And all thanks to Yoshitada Mianami from Japan who invented the Rice cooker in 1955.

19. Pressure Cooker

French physicist, Denrs Papin invented the pressure cooker in France. And can you believe the date? Its 1679.

20. Barbecue Grill

Although this appliance is more or else suitable outdoor, however, I decided this because it will also serve as an opener to you bbq lovers by letting us no when this "simple" machine was invented so that we won't just think they were just some crude design that just came like that. The Barbecue is into two series, gas and charcoal. While the modern charcoal grill version was invented by Ellsworth B. A. Zwoyer in 1897 in Pennsylvania, the gas grill was invented by Don McGlaughin in 1953.
