Na Dream? Resounding Success (Botswana) by Beaf: 2:39am On Oct 31, 2009 |
When can we be like this? This is a country that gained independence in 1966 under very hostile conditions; sorrounded by the apartheid nations of Rhodesia and South Africa. They also beat off military attacks by both apartheid countries. Botswana The Republic of Botswana (Tswana: Lefatshe la Botswana) is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Citizens of Botswana are called "Batswana" (singular: Motswana), regardless of ethnicity. Formerly a British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. It meets Zambia at a single point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botswana Since independence, Botswana has had the highest average economic growth rate in the world, averaging about 9% per year from 1966 to 1999. Growth in private sector employment has averaged about 10% per annum over the first 30 years of independence. The relatively high quality of the country's statistics means that these figures are likely to be quite accurate. The government has consistently maintained budget surpluses and has extensive foreign exchange reserves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Botswana In the case of Botswana, the government makes specific provision in its budget to ensure that mineral revenues are invested rather than consumed through government expenditures. It also maintains a large mineral revenue fund which can both finance future investments and buffer the government budget from swings in diamond prices. This sound combination of macroeconomic and natural resource management has permitted Botswana to avoid the ‘resource curse’ that has afflicted many oil producers. http://www.unep.org/greenroom/documents/WorldBank-WealthOfNationsPR.pdf |

If anything, I would want Nigeria to be the exact opposite of Botswana. Do you know that over a quarter of Botswana's population is malnourished, even though it is supposedly a success story? http://www.thezimbabwean.co.uk/2009102125756/african-perspectives/half-a-million-batswana-are-hungry-fao-report.html Their economy's dependence on minerals is far worse than Nigeria's dependence on oil. Their economy is expected to shrink by 20% this year. HIV/AIDS is also rampant here. You need to re-think this thread. Btw, Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source. |

blackspade: The hunger problem covers all of Africa, including Nigeria. Minerals make up only a quarter of Botswana's GDP. They have been able to diversify their economy with a good degree of success and it isn't shrinking. There is nothing wrong with wikipedia, but there are problems of bias with the zimbabwean. That is not to say there are no problems, afterall, they are still a developing country. |

Despite these obstacles, Botswana’s leadership has made the development of its people a priority. Since the 1990s, hunger has declined from 14 percent to 6.5 percent and maternal mortality has been cut in half, from 300 deaths per 100,000 live births to 150.16 Moreover, the government has worked hard to ensure that the gains from the diamond trade are used to fund basic infrastructure needs, such as roads, water, and electricity, as well as services such as hospitals and schools. In a recent analysis of governance indicators, including measures of voice and accountability, political stability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption, Botswana consistently ranked among the top of Africa’s most prosperous countries.17 Botswana’s example shows what is possible when governments invest in people. http://hungerreport.org/2009/chapters/development/52-governance |

Look at this world hunger map: Hunger is worse in Botswana than it is in Nigeria. That map you've shown is misleading, show me revenue. Botswana's economy is shrinking: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601116&sid=a7RImikNVwpQ Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, and they can put whatever bias on it they'd like (I found this out when I tried editing it, and someone went back and re-edited my stuff). |

@blackspade That hunger map na wa! The whole of Africa is in trouble! Nigeria's relative position is indeed, very positive. Their economy shrank only for the 1st quarter of this year. They came out of recession in the 2nd quarter and are now growing very strongly again. ==off topic== Was it this year that your changes were edited on wikipedia? I'm asking because its been tightened up quite a bit. Sometimes the editors bin changes. These days, it depends a lot on the topic and who is editing (it is easier for registered users, ostensibly because can be tracked). |

If only 60% of Botswana live above the international poverty line of $1.25/day, they should hang their head in shame. Cape Verde, a group of desert islands where they even have to import water has only 20% of people living below $1.25 a day. |

Ibime: Cape Verde is semi-desert, not desert. If Botswana hides its head in shame, what would we do in 9ja? This is all about how Botswana has been able to invest its mineral wealth in the development of its people. It had a similar beginning to ours, with diamonds as their only source of income. That country is an economic miracle considering the fact that 70% of the country is covered by the kalahari and life expectancy is down from 65 to 35 due to AIDs (treatment is free). They have made stunning investments in education, technology and infrastructure; all in a longsighted plan to diversify their economy away from minerals. There is a lot we can learn from Botswana. |

One or two islands of Cape Verde have some foilage, but most Islands are desert. . . . c'mon bruv, I was in Boavista in Cape Verde only 3 weeks ago. |

Ibime: Whatever. The point I'm making is Botswana's economic base is similar to ours, Cape Verdes isn't. |

One aspect where Nigeria and Botswana are similar, is the treatment meted out to the inhabitants of the source of their wealth. http://www.survivalinternational.org/tribes/bushmen |
