DONALD TRUMP: The Fears Of Nigerians And The Reality by Nobody: 6:02pm On Nov 09, 2016
Today is one of the saddest days in the lives of some considerable number of Nigerians, both at home and in diaspora, neither because of the death of a much revered national leader nor the occurrence of a national disaster but because a certain eccentric Donald Trump defied all the odds to become the United States of America’s President-elect.

As a Nigerian, I am more concerned about our perceptions of Donald Trump, bitter truths as well as national interests. Today, Americans have shown us what national interests means and nothing more, they have shown the world that national interests are sacrosanct over political correctness.

As a concerned Nigerian, I have defied all odds not to get swayed the popularly peddled erroneous notion held by Hillary Clinton and Democrats supporters in Nigeria that Nigeria will fare better under a Democrat Clinton government. The Democrat Obama government (of which Clinton was part of its half) let Nigeria down at the most critical time. Here are few instances:
• The US and other Western countries blatantly refused to sell arms to Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan to prosecute the war against Boko Haram terrorist activities hiding under the façade of poor human rights records but the same US could massively sell oil arms to many Middle East countries with far poorer human rights antecedents. We all know the numbers of lives and property, quantity of Foreign Direct Investments this single action cost us.
• The US State Department under Hilary Clinton was very dilatory in declaring Boko Haram a terrorist organization despite the fact that latter is described as one of the most deadly groups in the world. During her time as the Secretary of State, precisely 2011, the Boko Haram group attacked the United Nation Headquarters in Abuja claiming lives yet it did not spur the US to declare the Boko Haram a terrorist organization despite the urging of the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and over a dozen
• In addition, under the Democrat Obama government, America stopped buying oil from Nigeria causing a major blow to Nigeria’s revenue base. America did not consider the fact that Nigeria is one of its largest trade partners in Africa in that period.
• Nigeria is a regional power in Africa and still wield considerable influence yet the Democrat Obama government in its eight years, of which Clinton was part of its half, ignored Nigeria and visited other African countries such as Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya despite the fact that it has considerable stakes in Nigeria.

Moreover, despite the fact that one cannot overlook the eccentric, controversial, egoistic and jingoistic personality of Donald Trump, one should not overlook the truth in all his ‘nonsense’ statements.

“I will deport illegal immigrants”: everyone trying to demonise Trump for this assertion is only being hypocritical, no nationalistic person would hold brief for illegal immigration. Many countries, particularly the developed ones, loathe illegal immigrations, Nigeria is not left out-we should not pretend to forget the mass deportation of Ghanaians in 1984 for illegal immigration. We have lost count of the number of times many Nigerians have been massively airlifted from the UK, Canada, US to Nigeria on the basis of illegal immigration. Worse still our African brothers here- South Africa, Kenya and Libyans have deported many Nigerians this year. The question is why should anyone illegally enter my country?

Africans and Nigerians are lazy: if we are truly not lazy with our national resources, why are countries like Congo DRC and Nigeria, with unimaginable mineral and natural resources, still classified as developing countries? We may necessarily not be lazy in terms of physical work, we are too lazy to seriously tackle corruption which has been the bane of our development? Nigeria for instance is too lazy to produce pencils and toothpicks, grow her rice and develop her higher institutions to world class status. Isn’t that the bitter truth?

Trump’s views on Islam: from experience, the only set of enviable (in terms of behavior and tolerance) Muslims I have seen are the Yorubas, I have lived in the north(Sokoto-the Seat of the Caliphate), I have seen how Islam is being practiced there, only the educated ones are a little bit liberal and tolerant of other faiths. The killing of Redeemed female pastor in Abuja few months ago is not far-fetched. Truth be told, take a look at Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya etc, a lot of Muslims (both Sunni and Shiites) in these countries are extremists(my opinion though). Moreover, the number of terrorist attacks and mass shootings in France, Germany, Belgium and the US this year alone justify Trump’s claim. As a realist, nothing is too much for national security.

Trump is a racist: hypocrisy is when you condemn Trump of being a racist but still (as a Nigeria) view Kenyans, Beninoise, Togolose, Chadians etc. as inferior. We have many threads nairaland to this claim.

In conclusion, since there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop Donald Trump from being sworn in, it is incumbent we press our leaders to the entrenchment of good governance so that Nigeria can witness rapid economic development thus making the need to travel to the United States less, without this Nigeria cannot formulate a realistic and formidable foreign policies. Foreign policies requires sturdy economy to thrive.

The truth is that Nigerians, most that is, are selfish and self-centered. Imagine a friend of mine in London calling about whether or not his wife can still go to yankee to give birth. Meanwhile these people are rich in Lagos and travel abroad to give birth. Never have they for one day advocated for the resignation of military thugs like Buhari.

Also, Nigerians should face and embrace the truth. Nigeria, as the name indicates (Nigg.a Area) was and is a British creation designed to benefit the children of England and Europe, and that is what has and is happening. Imagine OBJ and now Buhari going abroad (or there wives) for medical checkups without shame.

Its time to see who we are, because the world knows who we are- several African nations that refuse to do the right thing because of oil greed and LAZINESS
