Japan left African champions Nigeria shaken to the core after they recorded a 6-0 thrashing in their opening game at Bava Park, Port Moresby on Sunday.

A hat-trick from Mami Ueno inspired the Young Nadeshiko past the Falconets who recorded their worst defeat ever in the history of the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Asians started brightly and put the Nigerians under pressure from the off, with Ueno’s effort in the opening minute being tipped on the crossbar and out for a corner.

Momiki’s close-range header on 32 minutes and doubled their advantage just three minutes later after Ueno got onto the end of captain Ruka Norimatsu’s neat pass and slotted past goalkeeper Sandra Chiichii.

Things went from bad to worse for the Africans when Momiki capitalised on a horrendous defending to complete her brace and Mary Ologbosere’s own goal in the 56th minute continued the remarkable rout in Group B’s opening fixture and cast further doubt over Nigeria's chances of winning the competition.

Ueno fired home from close-range before completing her treble with a beautiful strike eight minutes from time, embarking on a valiant solo run and smashing a powerful strike into the top corner.

Nigeria face Canada in their next game on November 16, while Japan would seek an early flight in the next round by defeating Spain at the Brava Park.
