WordPress and Joomla share features and attributes. They both started at the same time and share the same programming languages and mark up - PHP, MYSQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. They both have the same development structure: Create a design, add content, and extend the features with extensions / plugins. Joomla has always offered a true CMS experience and from the start has been more extendible than WordPress. But WordPress got far more popular than Joomla and this had been for some reasons.
