A major crackdown on corrupt foreigners laundering their ill-gotten gains in Britain has uncovered £170 million of suspected illicit assets in powerful new evidence of the scale of “dirty money” flowing into London.

The National Crime Agency said the suspect assets — which include multi-million-pound homes in London’s most expensive districts — had been identified in probes into 25 cases of “international corruption” it is carrying out with overseas law enforcers and all assets had been frozen under court orders.

Some of the suspected dirty money is held elsewhere in Britain or overseas, but the agency — dubbed Britain’s FBI — said much of it was in London, invested in property or other assets. It also plans to target the use of corruptly obtained money to buy “high-value residential property in the areas where the lights aren’t on”.

Donald Toon, the NCA’s director of prosperity, made the disclosure in an interview with the Standard, in which he vowed to intensify the purge on corrupt foreign investors when new powers come into effect.

He predicted that the reforms — including “unexplained wealth orders” requiring suspects to prove the source of their wealth and plans to force owners of overseas companies used to buy homes to reveal their identities — would have a “visible effect” on the London property market, including a dip in prices or demand for prime properties.

Mr Toon also revealed that the NCA had referred several lawyers to the Solicitors Regulation Authority for allegedly being lax and unprofessional over their legal duty to alert authorities to suspicious financial dealings by their clients. Professionals from other occupations such as accountancy have also been referred to their regulators.

Mr Toon’s most significant revelation, however, was about the value of suspect assets that the NCA had identified since it set up a specialist unit in June last year. “We have 25 live investigations for international corruption,” he said, adding that the assets involved totalled £170 million.

He said many of the probes involved multiple suspects and that citizens of Nigeria — which had a “very fundamental problem with corruption” — were among those under investigation.
