The Nigeria air force has decided to shed light on an aircraft handed to it by the presidency that crashed while taxing on a tarmac in Makurdi, Benue state capital, last week.

In a statement issued on Friday, Ayodele Famuyiwa, air force spokesman, said a panel had been set up to investigate the incident.

“The attention of the Nigerian air force (NAF)has been drawn to media report on the crash of one of the Agusta Westland 101 helicopters handed over recently by the presidency,” he said.

“Contrary to the crash report, it is pertinent to state that the mishap occurred while the helicopter was taxing after a successful mission. The incident happened last week on the tarmac at 33 Logistics Group, Makurdi.

“The NAF has since set-up a board of officers to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the incident. The seven-man board is headed by Air-Vice Marshal Emmanuel Anebi. Details of the investigation would be communicated to the public as soon as the board concludes its assignment.”

Two aircraft were handed over to the force on October 10.

If the bird was taxing on the ground, such a dramatic crash may have occurred when the pilot lost situational awareness and moved too close to a stationary object such that the main rotor blades hit a structure alongside the taxiway, or impacted a parked aircraft. Luckily nobody got decapitated by blade fragments that would have sprayed in all directions. The outcome of the incident could have been a lot worse.
