Despite the Federal Government’s war against corruption, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says that all the three tiers of government still misappropriate 50% of their allocations from the Federation Account.
The anti-graft agency’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, who linked the current recession to corruption, lamented that the Federal, State and local governments mismanaged their allocations.
Magu stated this on Thursday when he visited the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja.
He said that the recession prevalent in Nigeria was a fallout of the corruptive tendencies of the country’s leaders.
On the management of public funds, Magu said: “If 50% of the allocations at the three tiers of governments are judiciously put to use, we would not be where we are interns of underdevelopment and infrastructural decay.”
Magu warned that except Nigerians resolved collectively to fight corruption in all its ramifications, the youths would have a bleak future.
The EFCC boss said: “It is disturbing that Federal, State and Local Government allocations are persistently being misappropriated.”
He said that his visit to the Navy was in furtherance of the inter-agency collaboration between the EFCC and other government agencies.
According to him, the EFCC alone cannot fight corruption. He stressed that: “We need all hands to be on deck. We have come to appreciate you for the robust relationship that exists between the EFCC and the Nigerian Navy, and we want to leverage on that to stem corruption in Nigeria.”
He appealed to Ibas to help mobilize women in uniform, especially in the Nigerian Navy, for the December 7, 2016 flag-off of the “Women Against Corruption” programme of the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.
In his response, Ibas said that “corruption fuels insecurity and underdevelopment. We just cannot afford to continue like this.”
He advised the EFCC to pay attention also to corruption in the private sector.
