Amaju Pinnick living his ambition at the detriment of Nigeria's football

At a time when Nigeria football is in comatose, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick has embarked on yet another needless ego trip by his vaulting ambition to be on the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

It was not long ago that Pinnick staged at a reported cost of over 50 million Naira another huge ego trip when he hosted FIFA president Gianni Infantino and 18 federation presidents from across Africa.

We now all know why this grandstanding.

In September 2014, Mr Pinnick was elected president of the NFF under rather very controversial circumstances.

He said he sought to lead the country’s football by attracting corporate Nigeria to a sector that has continued to be financially dependent on the government.

He took immense pride in how he had got several top companies to partner with Delta Football Association while he was chairman.

But halfway through his four-year tenure at the NFF, major sponsors have pulled out, new sponsors have not been signed up, the federation have been crippled by mounting debts and now going cap in hand to government for more funds.

As we speak, eight-time African champions Super Falcons are holed up in an Abuja hotel over pay. Despite assurances and reassurances from the sports minister, the Falcons insist they be paid their entitlements before they will call off this scandalous sit-in protest.

Nigeria’s biggest football brand, the Super Eagles, the Flying Eagles, the Flamingoes, the Falconets as well as an experimental Nigeria U19s have not been spared the desperate financial hardship that has overtaken the NFF.

Most national team coaches have not been paid this year and it needed a special 100 million Naira bailout from the government before the Super Eagles could honour a World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

Yet, he could charter a plane “through private arrangements” at 42 million Naira to fly in and out of Cameroon for the women’s AFCON final the previous weekend.

Also, results under Mr Pinnick have been most disastrous - Nigeria have failed to qualify for the AFCON on two straight occasions and both the Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets have failed to qualify for their respective AFCONS for the first time in a long time.

It is against this gloomy backdrop that Pinnick now wishes to embark on his selfish quest to sit on the highest decision-making body of African football even against wiser counsel.

And he has gone about this by not carrying along even his most immediate constituency, the NFF executive committee, as his colleague Chris Green has been bold to reveal.

This clearly shows that Mr Pinnick has been managing Nigeria football by his whims and caprices and so the sorry state of the game today.

The NFF congress must now rise above their own selfish interests to vote out Pinnick at the severally postponed Annual General Assembly on December 18 in Lagos.

They were all willing tools in the conspiracy and fraud that brought Pinnick to office two years ago. But they now have a unique opportunity to redress that mistake so that history could still be kind to them.

Amaju Pinnick Killing Football in Nigeria – Chris Green

Says CAF seat bid not approved by NFF board

There seems to be no peace in the executive board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), since the news of the President, Amaju Pinnick’s submission of his nomination form for an executive seat in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) broke out.

Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Chris Green, yesterday described Nigerian football as a sinking ship under the administration of Pinnick.

Green, who stated in a telephone chat that the members of the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are at dagger-drown, described as inordinate, the ambition of the football federation president, Pinnick, to contest for a seat at the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) executive committee.

He accused him of placing personal ambition above that of national interest and urged him (Pinnick) to concentrate his energy in redirecting the sinking ship of Nigerian football. He stressed that unlike the board did during the time of former President Aminu Maigari, Pinnick’s decision to contest for a CAF seat was neither deliberated at the NFF board meeting nor given the endorsement of the Federal Government.

“I just read that Amaju has sent in nomination through the General Secretary of the NFF. I want to say that there was no time the executive committee of NFF met to come out with a decision authorising Amaju to contest in the CAF executive committee.

“For such decision to be taken, it must be done by majority of the NFF board in concurrent with the Ministry of Sports representing the Federal Government. The procedure must be followed because it is not a personal position since anybody going there is going to represent Nigeria. For now, I don’t think it is proper for any member of this present board to embark on such a mission.

“There is a lot to be done in Nigeria to stabilise the ship of football in this country. We have to look for sponsors that will help redirect the financial situation facing us and put us in the proper footing. How should one of the best heads in the federation who is supposed to sit down and think of the way forward abandon his responsibility and donate himself to CAF?” He queried.

“If truth must be told, the present situation in Nigerian football is facing does not need a distraction like this. Recall that when Aminu Maigari contested, he had the backing of the board and federal government. FG did not only back him but supported him financially. It is the same thing Ibrahim Galadima and Amos Adamu contested,” he said.

CAF SEAT: Pinnick plans for Ghana FA boss to step down for him

We can exclusively reveal today that Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has already perfected his ascension to the CAF executive committee – Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi will step down for him and in turn he will support the GFA chief to stay put on the FIFA council.

Both the CAF executive committee and FIFA Council polls are slated for March 2017

“Pinnick and Nyantakyi are from the same zone and he has now hammered out a plan for Nyantakyi to step down for him for the CAF position, while he will fully support him for his re-election for a seat on the FIFA Council,” a top source specially informed AfricanFootball.com

This explains the close alliance between the two men in recent times.

Pinnick flew Nyantakyi back on his chartered flight from the recent AWCON final in Cameroon for them to attend a sports award in Lagos together.

Nyantakyi was also among the 18 football federation presidents who Pinnick hosted during the visit of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to Nigeria in July.

A lawyer and banker, the 48-year-old Nyantakyi has been GFA president since December 2005.

He was first elected on the CAF executive committee in February 2011.

He is also the president of the sub-regional WAFU B and owns Ghanaian club Wa All Stars.

Nice post robosky02!!! I don't know when African FAs will stop their over dependent on Government. Hence we have so many problems. African FA chairmen need to work very hard to change that situation.
