The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has said waiver of tax and charges granted by the government to some companies induce corruption in Nigeria.

The minister also said Nigeria’s current economic mess was largely caused by corruption.

Speaking at a national conference on corruption in Abuja at the weekend, Adeosun, who defined corruption as “abuse of entrusted power for private gain”, added that corruption was inimical to national development.

The minister who was represented by Mrs Patience Oniha, Head Efficiency Unit of the ministry also said many Nigerians had accepted corruption as a way of life.

She said “waivers and allocations unintentionally induced corruption.”

Adeosun further said poor record systems, weak judicial systems and weak internal audit also contributed to corruption in the country.

Weak anti-corruption institutions and non-enforcement of sanctions or punishment on officials accused of corruption and pervading poverty are fuelling corruption in Nigeria, she added.

In May 2015, the Senate reportedly uncovered a N447 billion waiver fraud that involved big local firms importing rice, sugar and other products. The fraud was allegedly done through import duty waivers, concessions and grants by agencies of the Federal Government. The report then recommended that some firms who imported rice with the waivers and grant remit over N23billion, while others for sugar imports were to remit over N48billion.

This is the most stupid individual that occupied the office of the minister of Finance in the history of Nigeria.

Every growing economy needs import waivers for critical sectors that will stimulate growth and create employment.

If corruption is why we are in the mess we are in today, why is the whole economy worse off now that you are fighting corruption than it was when corruption "reigned" ?

Bunch of incompetent hypocrites.

Very incompetent indeed!
It's out of their incompetence that made them to take solace in blame games. It's only this administration that keeps blaming their predecessor as if other past leaders before GEJ was not corrupt. These people need to be reminded that they were not voted for to come and blame their predecessor but to help fix the country. That's what leaders do.

She's not totally wrong. In Nigeria, waivers are gotten by knowing someone somewhere.

Even if you don't merit it, you'll be granted waiver if you're willing to grease their palms (Ministry of Ind, Trade & Inv and few Senators) which makes the original aim of granting waivers defeated and unavailable to the budding entrepreneurs.

Instead of scrapping it totally sha, they should make the process thorough and weed off those erroneously benefitting from the scheme.

And all these happened under the watch of a certain PhD holder and the so-called Harvard graduate as Coordinating Minister of Finance and Economy.
