Nature has equipped a woman with the power to give birth but not every woman is lucky enough because there are thousands who struggle with female infertility issues. Age is one of the key determinants of fertility as it goes on diminishing with every passing year. A woman is born with millions of eggs and the number as well as the quality of eggs comes down as she grows older. A study of reproductive lifespan of a female gives a fair idea of the relationship between maternal age and fertility.

Female Infertility: Age is not just a number!

With regards to a woman’s fertility, age is not just a number but a vital parameter of a woman’s ability to conceive. Fertility is at its peak when she is in her early twenties, with the odds of pregnancy being the highest at the average age of 24 years, up at 96% in a year. Moreover, there are best chances of delivering a healthy baby because the eggs are chromosomally normal.

As the woman goes into her mid-thirties, the magical years seem to get over as the odds of pregnancy falter down to 78% in a year, with fertility diminishing gradually as the eggs lose their viability. Treatments like IUI, IVF and donor eggs should be considered for women at this age so that the probability of healthy pregnancy is maximized. Things go worse as the woman steps into her forties because she gets closer to the menopausal age. The egg quality suffers, ovulation cycle gets shortened and the blood supply to the uterine lining is reduced, causing compromise with the ability to conceive.

For women aged 40 and over, the success rate of natural conception is very poor and it is best to consider the options of assisted reproductive techniques. Donor egg IVF comes as the most feasible one because it ensures a healthy pregnancy with a “younger” egg.

If a woman postpones motherhood to a later age or battles some major infertility issues, she needs to get expert medical help sooner rather than later. She should be aware that her biological clock is ticking and there may be time when she might regret getting help too late.

IVF should be used as a last resort for treatment of infertility and it is very expensive. Only a few people can afford it and not every process of In Vitro Fertiliation can lead to a woman giving birth and yet she would still be charged for it.
