NJC Wants 2 Judges Accused Of Corruption Sacked by vincencior(m): 11:19pm On Dec 16, 2016

The National Judicial Council on Friday ordered the compulsory retirement of two judges, Ugbo Ononogbo and Nasir Gummi of the Abia State and Zamfara State High courts respectively.

The judges were recommended for dismissal following allegations of corruption.

In a statement signed by the NJC’s director of communication, Soji Oye, the council said it recommended the dismissal of the judges, following its investigation into the allegations.

“The National Judicial Council under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Acting Chief Justice Walter S. N. Onnoghen, CFR, at its 80th Meeting which was held on 14th and 15th December, 2016 recommended the dismissal of Hon. Justice Ugbo Ononogbo of the Abia State High Court of Justice and the compulsory retirement from office of Hon. Justice Nasir Gummi of Zamfara State High Court of Justice with immediate effect.

“Hon. Justice Ugbo Ononogbo, Abia State High Court, was recommended for dismissal to the Governor of Abia State, Pursuant to the findings by the Council on the following allegations inter-alia contained in a petition written against His Lordship by Mr. Urum Udensi Ifegwu.
“Hon. Justice Umar Nasir Gunmi was recommended for compulsory retirement from office to His Excellency, Hon. (Dr) Abdul Aziz Yari Abubakar, Governor of Zamfara State sequel to the findings of Council following allegations against His Lordship,” the statement said.

This is why the NJC will to me remain a very useless body. Why call for just retirement and dismissal without asking them to be prosecuted.
Whatever they Av done to Av deserve such punitive measures from NJC suggests not only them going against their code of conduct and ethics as a judge but also a crime to the Nigerian state. They both need to be prosecuted in a law court.

The two judicial officers are Justice Ugbo Ononogbo of the Abia State High Court and Hon. Justice Nasir Gummi of Zamfara State High Court. Apart from recommending the dismissal of Justice Ononogbo to the governor of Abia State, the Council also recommended that the judge, the assistant chief registrar, Probate Division of Abia State High Court, Udeka N. C., and E. M. Ojiako, Esq, be handed over to the police for investigation

NJC had done it jobs. It is left for the executive to act on the recommendations and prosecute those alleged.

A lot of ignorant people just hear 'dismissal' and instantly start screaming for prosecution. Many times judges are dismissed/compulsorily retired for practices bordering on judicial misconduct which are not criminal in nature.

One of the judges in this case was recommended for compulsory retirement for not delivering judgment in a case about two years after final addresses were adopted, which is way outside the ninety days prescribed by the constitution. That is a judicial misconduct but you cannot prosecute him for that.

Also the NJC does not have powers to prosecute. They have done the needful by dismissing the judges. It is noe left for the agencies vested with the power of prosecution to take up the cases.

I guess most people don't understand what this means. Their dismissal means they can now be prosecuted by a competent court of jurisdiction.

Let them be suspended and handed to the police for prosecution and if they are found guilty or if they are convicted, then let them be sacked, this depending on the weight of their crimes whether it is taking of bribe and perversion of justice, and punished as appropriate whether by imprisonment or so. For those who live in white house ought to keep their own clothes white first before they start to punish the others for not keeping their own clean and white

And it is only in Africa mainly and alone that corrupt, bribe taking and justice perverting judges are appointed to judging other criminals, a higher criminals judging lesser criminals, which is equal to injustice and corruption and a hopeless society. Higher order criminals in wigs. But let there be a change for better in Africa and Nigeria in particular.

Nigeria is the place where the politicians will loot all the money of the people, the judges will ensure that the looters keep the money and will never allow such to be recovered by the nation and the lawyers will gather in large numbers to ensure that the looters escape justice. The same thing they did with election, they rig elections in streets, bribe judges and the others in court and pay for the services of terrible corrupt lawyers to defend their riggings in court and there is corruption everywhere. But thank God there is a small change now even though it is also a sick change, but may be with time..
