The door or window of a plane can or cannot be open when in flight. It all depends on so many things. Foreign movies are often guilty of showing scenes of planes falling from the sky due to the door of the plane being opened by a passenger. It usually starts like a fellow passenger with a parachute goes to the emergency exit and yanks the door open, sending every unsecured person including bag and baggage's into the stratosphere. The question is 'what will really happen if the door or window of a plane is open air-bound?' 'Is it really possible to open it?'

What Will Happen if a Passenger Opens The Door or Window?

This depends on certain factors such as the speed of the plane and the altitude. At high speed and altitude the pressure within the plane will be greater than the pressure outside. This is due partly to the lower air pressure at high altitude. According to Bernoulli's principle which states that 'a faster moving stream of air is lower in pressure than a stationary one.' So when a door is open suddenly without due process, the cabin will loss pressure very fast and chaos will set in. This sudden decompression will cause any body near the exit without belt to be ejected into the stratosphere, cabin temperature will reduce and the plane might start to break apart. At above 25000 ft, passengers that could remain inside need oxygen mask to survive or they will be unconscious in less than 30 secs. If no body help them with oxygen after then, they will die. At lower altitudes chances of explosive decompression is high.

Dozens of other examples of explosive decompression have been recorded

What is The Possibility of Opening The Door or Window?

The technology employed make use of a lock which on it's own require pressure to open inward. Since the plane is pressurized, opening the plane inward after unlocking will require the strength of a superman. This is because the pressure within is about 1100 pounds against each square foot of the door. It is practically impossible. These doors can only be open when the plane is grounded and internal and external pressure are equal.

The only time it can be done in flight is when the pilot decompress the cabin. And this reason why they do this is for parachutes and delivery of relief materials. Some small planes are not pressurized since they do not fly in high altitudes.

What of Fighter Jets?

They are not as pressurized as commercial airlines since the pilots are always wearing mask breathing oxygen dilution all the time.

and that depends on if the plane was no depressurised by the pilot before it was open.
