In all I stand with Nigerian graduates. The truth is that the jobs aren't available. An average graduate is willing to learn and add new skills if given the platform.

Of the truth, our educational sector might not be able to dish the needed skills of relevance in our today's world. That is why graduates are expected to undergo traineeship in various organisations as an entry level to familiarize them with industry work practices.

They complain about incompetence amongst graduates but the question remains if those that have climbed up the ladder were not once in their shoes.

Stop reminding us of our problems but help us with solutions..

I stand to be corrected but why do we have work experience categorization?

The first three years should be for intensive grooming of a graduate to streamline their foreknowledge with their chosen career path.

Basically if we are being sincere with ourselves, Soft skills are the most required criteria for entry level.. It is quite unfortunate that organisations want us to join them as mid level professional in graduate categorisation.

We might say competitiveness for employment has made organisations to raise their expectations from graduates. Some graduates have taken the burden upon themselves to gather technical skills just to have edge over others in the job market. The question again remains that is it the fault of a graduate who spent 3-5 years of analytical skills and little technical exposure not to get job?

Let's stop the game of pushing and passing blames. We are all guilty. Government, Employers of Labor, University system and the accused graduates.

We know corporate sector don't want to waste their resources in grooming graduates in a competitive market. So why give graduate bad name if you can't help them?

Government should provide technical centres for university graduates to undergo internship just like medical students. Shouldn't NYSC be reviewed and be converted to a form of internship in a parastatal relating to your discipline? why should an engineer be in the classroom teaching?

Graduates! now that you know the market wants more from you and your government isn't helping matters, what plans have you made to develop yourself?

If we can sincerely answer these questions ourselves, then we are close to getting our of this public threat.

10 Reasosn Too Many Nigerian Graduates Are Unemployable
1. The country is messed up by corruption and terrible leadership
2. The universities are rather static, producing half baked “hand out” graduates
3. The students are just lazy. Most tend to prefer short cuts rather than burning the midnight oil. When I was a student, I studied to know stuff so well that I could teach other students better that the lecturers taught us. I also had an interest in applying what I learnt to everyday life. Students nowadays don’t test and apply what they learn in school.
4. Poor communication skills. Oral and written communication is so bad I often have headaches conversing with many graduates. There’s gross lack of understanding and application of basic grammar and language structure. Many don't know when to use present, past, future tense let alone past participle or future perfect tense. Many can’t distinguish between “there” and “their”, his or he’s, etc. When you see such poor language on CV’s, applications or proposals, chances are you’ll bin them.
5. Most are unprepared for work. They just want to get a job, lazy about doing nothing and expect to be paid more than their employers.
6. There’s also so much “I know someone that knows someone” mentality; so they think they have right to get the job and expect to be treated specially.
7. Graduates are grossly ill prepared for interviews. They end up not giving a good account of themselves.
..
..
..
10. There’s also the annoying comment or expectation that “God will do it”.

The first important thing to know here is that if you’ve been invited to attend an interview, it means they think you can do the job. To get it, you must be able to demonstrate that you are employable. The second thing to bear in mind is that you are not the only one that wants the job. Don’t waste time praying to get the job. Prepare to get the job. If you're not getting interview invites, here's what you need to do.....
