The Registrar Of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Pharmacist Elijah Mohammed, , has restated the Federal Government’s commitment towards ending of open drug hawking by August 1, 2017.

Pharm. Mohammed assured Nigerians during an interview in Abuja yesterday saying it is part of the efforts to control drug distribution system in Nigeria.

He said the step would assist in closing the menace of open drug hawking.

In addition, he said a lot of the hawkers sell expired, fake and adulterated medicines.

He said that the affected dealers would be repositioned to the centres that will enable them to carry out their activities in a well-conducted manner.

According to him, the centres would go a long way to ending drug hawking, among others, as there is going to be strict regulation of drug distribution and sales at the centres.

Furthermore, he however stated that anyone caught operating outdoors after the dead-line date would be arrested and punished accordingly by the law.

“The issue of open drug market will end by August 1st next year and we are working hard toward that and have arranged necessary measures to take care of that which is the coordinated wholesale centres.”

“The coordinated wholesale centre in Onitsha which is situated in Oba will oversee the Onitsha overhead bridge. And we have inspected the location and it has been granted approval and development has kicked off.”

“We have just four centres to control the major open drug market and we have only one centre in each of the states where those operations are predominant because it was only one open drug market that have been identified,” said Pharmacist Elijah Mohammed.
