[b]Once considered the laggards of the auto industry and largely limited to the smallest “econobox” cars, four-cylinder engines have come a long way in recent years and for the first time, they lead the business in terms of market share. According to the latest Market Trends and Loyalty report issued by Experian Automotive, 37.7% of all new light-duty vehicles sold in the U.S. through the first nine months of 2016 came fitted with four-cylinder engines. That’s up from 30.4% of the market in 2010 and just 7% back in 1975. While four-cylinder engines and are being used more extensively to help automakers meet increasingly strict federal fuel economy goals, thanks to the latest engine designs smaller doesn’t necessarily mean slower. In fact, today’s four-cylinder engines are nearly as powerful as were eight-cylinder engines 20 years ago.
