Though Abia government says it has commenced the payment of July salaries to primary school teachers in the state, The Town Crier investigations reveal teachers cannot cash the cheques issued for payments.

The Town Crier learnt that the Local Government Education Authorities began to issue salary cheques to the teachers on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, a teacher in Umuahia North Local Government Area (LGA), on condition of anonymity, said that the cheques could not be cashed “because they had no cash backing”.

“We were paid last in June. I got my cheque on Wednesday, Dec. 28, while some got theirs on Friday– but it did not specify which month’s pay.

“But, we take it that the cheques represent the July salary,” the teacher said.

Another teacher who identified herself simply as Anthonia said she collected her cheque on Wednesday but had not been able to cash it.

The Town Crier leanrt teachers got credit alerts from their banks on Wednesday to show that their salary had been paid but the bank balance remained the old amount of money.

They were told by bank officials that the cash had not dropped and was advised to wait until it did.

A Local Government Education Authority Secretary in one of the LGAs confirmed the development on condition of anonymity, saying the banks would go to the clearing house before they would commence cash payment to the teachers.

The Chairman of Abia State Universal Basic Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, declined to speak on the issue when contacted.

That's true. They were complaining bitterly yesterday. Though I trust the governor. He have performed more than T A Orji and Orji Uzor Kalu(16yrs) just in less than 2years. Nevertheless, I still stand with Buhari for better Nigeria.

Scam everywhere. This might just be another means to deceive the teachers and still hold on to their salaries much longer. 'The more you look the less you see'. undecided

July what? How have they been surviving. I grew up in a house that is dependent on monthly salary, out sustainance (Rent, School fees, feeding, major projects) is dependent on when the govt pays. However payment was regular then at the state level (80's).
Some of these guys in government today had similar experience wonder why they are now making civil servants to pass through hell before being paid their wages. My heart bleeds whenever I hear stories of civil servants being owed.

Say the following prayers after me...oh God, I refuse to crossover to 2017 with the spirit of ethnic bigotism.
How many months salary is being owed Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti civil servants?

I'm just wondering what these people do with the allocation they receive every month from Abuja. Every sector- health, secondary education, tertiary education- are owed same number of months or more. No visible capital project (even if you're doing capital project, you can borrow to do that, not with people's means of livelihood), what do these guys now do with the money they get.

This is a state with a lot of industries and SME's, and they all pay taxes. The money they collect from Ariaria market, shopping centre, cemetery market every month runs in billions. What do they do with these money. And I ask again, what do they do with these money

My sister I've seen wickedness but this is a level above others. And to think that they've not been paid since July. What are their salaries used for? Blank cheques!!! We should all be prepared for 2017, only the fittest will survive till 2019 trust me.
