Anambra: Jonathan, 7 govs for Soludo’s campaign - Prepare your handover note, Soludo tells Gov Obi

From Leon Usigbe and Sylvanus Eze - 20.11.2009

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has named Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as head of the campaign committee of Professor Chukwuma Soludo, its candidate in the 2010 governorship election in Anambra State.

Also included on the committee are the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, governors of Delta, Kogi, Bauchi, Oyo, Enugu, Ebonyi and Imo states, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, Alhaji Isa Yuguda, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mr. Sullivan Chime, Chief Martins Elechi and Chief Ikedi Ohakim, respectively.

According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Professor Rufai Alkali, in Abuja on Thursday, other members of the committee include the deputy national chairman of the PDP, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, the Organising Secretary, Mr. Uche Secondus, the National Women’s Leader, Hajiya Inna Ciroma and the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Honourable Emeka Ihedioha.

Also included are all PDP senators from the South East, all PDP members of the House of Representatives from the South East, Chief Olisa Metuh, national vice chairman, South East and all PDP ministers from the South East
The list also has other prominent South East PDP stakeholders, including a former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as well as Professor Jerry Gana, Senator Femi Kila, Senator Onyeabo Obi and Mr. Henry Balogun.

The rest are Mr. Onyeachi Ibezue, Chief Maduka Anene Olisa, Mr. Azubuike Eze, Senator Bala Adamu Kariya, Dr. Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu, Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chief Arthur Eze, Chief Simeon Okeke, Senator Mike Ajaegbo, General Lawrence Onoja, (rtd) and Mr. Chuks Udemezue.

The Deputy National Secretary of the PDP, Dr. Babayo Shehu, is to serve as secretary to the committee which would be inaugurated on Tuesday next week.

Meanwhile, Professor Charles Soludo has advised Governor Peter Obi of the All Peoples Grand Alliance (APGA) to be preparing his handover note because he would definitely leave Anambra Government House when the people of the state would elect the person of their choice in the 2010 governorship election.

Professor Soludo, who was speaking on Thursday at the Emmaus House in Awka, in a reconciliation meeting with the PDP five principal officers in all the 326 wards of the state and members of the PDP executive in all the 21 local government areas of the state, said that Anambra State was PDP state and the party would capture the governorship seat in the election.

He told Governor Obi that PDP will not give him the loopholes he used in capturing the seat he is now occupying because the PDP in Anambra State now is one indivisible family without factions as it was before, which Obi capitalised on, to come to power.

Soludo called on the PDP principal officers in all the 326 wards of the state and local government PDP executives in the state to start reconciliation process immediately they reached their wards, uniting people and bringing new people to the PDP fold in preparation for the 2010 election.

In his response, the PDP caretaker committee secretary in the state, Honourable Tony Mobike, thanked God for uniting PDP once more and promised that the party will accommodate everybody, no matter the factions they formerly belonged to.

How will it be possible for the EFCC to prosecute the 1st lady of Abia State when the attention of her husband will be required in neighbouring Anambra State for campaigning duties on behalf of Mr Soludo. I think the PDP has taking us for a fool, this is just blatant misguidance of the highest order.

I weep for my nation, the only people anything is happening for are the Politicians and the friend’s and crony’s of Politicians any other and every other sector of the economy is on a standstill.

One of the major problems we face in Nigeria is misinformation or wrong information based on wrong premises and assumptions.

Do you know who the governor of Abia State is? If yes, is he a PDP member? If no, then what has the issue of 1st lady of Abia state doing in your post above?

It makes sense that Theordore Orji is not part of the Campaign team and better still he is not a PDP member, I mistook him for the guy in Imo State my mistake.

It will be dis-honorable for the Presidency to Include a suspected rogue and fraudster amongst a high powered committee even if were a PDP member. undecided

Re: Anambra: Prepare Handover Note, Soludo Tells Obi. Jonathan, 7 Govs For Campaign. by McKren(m): 11:51am On Nov 22, 2009
Folks let us put Soludo's comments in context!!!!!

There should be a guber election in Anambra 4 months all of a sudden Peter Obi wants to conduct council elections in the State. He had 4years to do this but did not, why 4 months to next election? His intentions are surely questionable.

Now talking about Soludo's comments. In a civilised society come February 2010 while Peter Obi is preparing his manefesto and plans for his next tenure, he will also be writing his handover notes in case he fails at the polls. While Obi's supporters will be hoping that all he Obi has to make public is his plans for the next 4years, Obi's opponents should only be interested in his handover notes. So SOLUDO simply reminded OBI what a natural opponent to anyone in a political contest should be saying.

OR ARE WE SUGGESTING THAT SOLUDO SHOULD ASK OBI TO ANNOUNCE HIS PLAN FOR 2010-2014? surely that will raise the question whether he is even confident about his chances in the first place.

Nigerians need to grow up politically. This comment by Soludo is strategic as well as psychological, if Peter Obi decides to be cowed by it, its his business.

i don't think pdp needs all these noise and stress. all they need to do is to liase with chris and andy uba and they will do it like they did in 1999 and 2007 respectively and anambra will be theirs.
to me, this is a move to decieve us because they know their ways to the state house.
we must not forget that pdp is still working with the most stupid professor in the history of professorship(iwu) so what is the need of all these federal fools trooping to the poor anambra state?
the only solution to this pdp madness is resistance. anambra ppl have been doing their best in this area of life that is resisting pdp through all channels.
soludo has gone a long way to prove his inabilities. is soludo telling us he cannot do it on his own? if a person is not capable of meeting his people or conviencing them to vote for him, i don't see that toy as been able to handle things in the state house.
we have seen many toys end up this way and a typical example of such foolish toys is that chief ohakim of imo state who was used also by pdp. what has ohakim got to tell anambra ppl? what has he achieved in his almost 3 yrs on seat?
the energy, time and resources these federal criminals are wasting on anambra and soludo can help nigeria go a long way in development.
no wonder nothing is happening in nigeria. if these big fools have been delegated to dupe anambra people, who is working for nigeria then?
my prayers is that any gathering that is not for the interests of the populace, God will surely put them to shame.

Catastrophic Failure: Soludo’s verdict on Anambra leadership

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) for the February 6, 2010 election in Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has blamed the precarious security situation and other problems on “catastrophic failure of leadership in the state”. The former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) who spoke during an exclusive interview with Daily Sun at his country home, Umueze village (Isuanaoma), Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State at the weekend regretted that Anambra which ought to be a first class state was reeling under a third class leadership.

Speaking against the background of the scary security situation in the state under which his 78-year old father, Pa Simeon Soludo, was kidnapped last month, he asserted that the worrisome situation was one of the factors that nudged him into volunteering to serve and rescue his people.
He declared: “Anambra is a first class state and requires a first class material to lead them. You cannot have a first class state and offer it a third class governance. It just won’t work. In Anambra today, there are refugees, people are running away.

There is a refugee situation in Anambra. It may not be so pronounced because you are not seeing people in camps, but people are moving in droves out of the state. Go to Nnewi, its dead, literarily dead. Look at the factories that used to be; that’s a place where foreigners used to describe as the emerging Japan of Africa; go to the place today, everybody has run away. Go to Onitsha, everybody is moving across to Asaba; come to Awka, it’s a ghost town. I mean Anambra is just dead now, in economic terms.
“There are no jobs, insecurity is just second nature. It has degenerated to a level at which even the kidnappers who kidnapped my dad told me that it is part of the culture.

That’s the way they described it. Well, I don’t know much of what the governor has done, but whatever he has done, obviously has not worked, because people are so scared. You can’t even do certain things that are supposed to be done at home any longer. People are now having traditional marriages in Abuja, Lagos and so on. Why? the fear of going home. And the investors cannot come. You cannot create jobs under this state of insecurity. And therefore, for me, that is the first job of government.”

Soludo listed among aspects of his agenda to restore Anambra to a secure path, creation of hundreds of thousands of job opportunities for teeming unemployed youth, creating new models of community policing, adequate equipment for the police and other security agencies, informal policing schemes and intelligence network.

While vowing to ensure a secure Anambra “where people can sleep with their two eyes closed”, he declined to divulge further details of his security blueprint saying, “I don’t need to discuss the details of that here on the pages of newspaper or on the podium” for obvious reasons.
Appraising his chances in the February 6, 2010 governorship election, he described them as very bright because “Anambra State is a PDP state”. As he put it, Anambra is more than 85 to 90 percent PDP. He predicted a landslide victory for PDP in the election, saying “we are not leaving anything to chance. We will win landslide. We don’t just want to win; we want to win very convincingly and that is why we are not leaving any stone unturned in the mobilization process that is ongoing. As you are aware, as the largest party not only in the state but in the country and Africa at large, there were almost 50 governorship aspirants who were interested in picking the ticket of the party which is a demonstration of the fact that it is the party on ground”.

Soludo, while stressing that the reconciliation efforts of PDP was on full throttle to assuage the anger of aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders following his emergence as the candidate, admitted that a 100 percent healing may not be feasible before the poll early next year. He had this to say about the pent up anger in some quarters with the state chapter of the PDP: “And of course, following that (his choice), there were some that are nursing some feelings and we are in the process of the healing. And I can tell you right now - if you have 50 per cent of PDP members working for PDP, you have a landslide victory. And I can bet you that we have well passed 80 per cent in terms of getting the entire house together. So, I think basically, this is a PDP state and the next government will be formed by the PDP under my leadership.”

On his promise of a quick turn-around of Anambra State into a model city state as the new African Dubai-Taiwan and the feasibility of the plan, he stressed that Dubai and Taiwan were developed due to sheer vision, outstanding leadership and entrepreneurship of the people. He promised to galvanize and mobilize Anambra to achieve a similar feat.

Said Soludo, “…Anambra State is uniquely better endowed to do better than even Taiwan and Dubai because it has the largest concentration of entrepreneurs anywhere in Africa. Anambra people are all over Nigeria, all over Africa, all over the world, especially in the United States developing those climes. Anambra has a unique geographical advantage. It has a boundary with the North through Benue and Kogi; it has a boundary with the west through Delta, boundary with South-south through Rivers, boundary with Imo, Abia and Enugu states.”

He described Anambra as a very special state in the country with the highest population density after Lagos and so uniquely positioned with potentially navigable waterways by way of the River Niger, which is being dredged. “And I can see the skylines along the banks of the River Niger. What you require is leadership and vision and that is what has been lacking totally – leadership and vision for our people,” he stressed.

Speaking further on what Anambra State needs to leapfrog to the enviable levels attained by Dubai and Taiwan, the PDP candidate said the full potentials of the people would be unleashed “when they see leadership that they can trust; leadership they can believe in a proven hand that can mobilize not only the domestic but also global resources of the people to move forward.”

Talking about over confidence, is there a real measure and SI unit for confidence that will enable us to know exactly when confidence will be said to have been over? Actually, confidence is one of that guy's virtues and he has deployed it fearlessly, with some cold ruthlessness and has delivered massively. So, that guy has a record of getting things done. If he says he will do it, then i want to believe that he will!

I said it when Soludo was CBN Governor that he has some measure of healthy dictatorship needed for any person occupying any executive position to get things done.

There is nothing wrong in being confident at all. I will rather have a confident leader than a leader who pretends he does not want to be there. I think we should shun politics of prefering candidates who pretend not to want the office they are running for. This ideology has been the norm for a while and it has not been helpful. Let us try those campaigning vigorously for the job.

I am neither a Pro- or Anti- Soludo.

But i have 2 questions for the Pro- Soludos.

(1) How did Soludo become the Flag bearer of PDP.
a. through Party's Primary Election
b. through selection
(2) When did he become a partisan politician.
a. before becoming the CBN Govenor
b. After leaving the CBN.

Let us be sure if his emergence is democratic first.

Thanks for your reasonable answers.
