ABUJA-More than one year after it came on board, the president Mohammadu Buhari led administration has commenced payment of N5,000 monthly stipends it promised to poor Nigerians. The development was substantially embedded in the campaign promises of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC during the 2015 presidential election. The Programme is also a part of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) of its Social Investment Programmes, SIP for which N500 billion was appropriated in the 2016 national budget.

Aside the N-Power jobs where graduates and other participants in the Programme are paid N3,000 per month, the CCT also targets one million Nigerians who would receive N5000 monthly payments as a form of social safety net. Nine states are mapped out for coverage in this first batch and already, many of the beneficiaries were reported to have started receiving their first payments by Friday last week.

The states were Borno, Kwara, Bauchi, Cross Rivers, Niger, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun and Ekiti.

How can the "poor" be identified in the country? Let me watch and see how they will go about this.

We have a handful of youths with excellent business ideas, some with awesome skills yet others with technical prowess. These when encouraged will create the foundation to boost our economy and further reduce unemployment rate.

Giving 5k is just a temporal cure for the deasease, we can go for permanent healing. Let the govt think more of the future when making policies.

Raising import duty for luxury items also is good, but should be aimed at attracting foreign industries and companies to have a branch here in Nigeria. So taxation especially for foreign companies and industries should reduce significantly, power stable and security beefed up. Let's attract investors.

Encourage religious organization to assist in carrying out some govt projects, tax them where possible to fund the treasury. Cut the salaries of the politicians and increase that of civil servants.

We talk more on diversification than act on it. Do something to prove you're not just talking.

I believe there is still hope somehow for Nigeria but that's when we'll begin to think more selflessly. When we make policies with the intention to better the nation and not just to project ourselves or party.

I condemn with the whole of my heart this move as it is nowhere near the solution Nigeria is currently facing.
