World: A Look At Secession Movements. by Cletus77(m): 7:59pm On Jan 03, 2017
It is quite surprising that regions which once fomed great countries are now in one way or the other seeking to seceed from these countries. Some are due to unlawful resource exploitation and epileptic developments of their regions, while others may be fuelled by hatred for the government as a result of lack of attention from the government. Although there are other reasons why members of certain countries desire total autonomy over their economic, social and political affairs, the two above factors are the leading causes of secession.
Here we will take a quick look at secession desires by different regions of countries around the world.

Catalonia, Spain
Catalonia is an autonomous community in northeast Spain located at the Iberian peninsula. It is one of the richest region of Spain with beautiful environments and wealth at the disposal of the citizens.
The Catalan people feel different from the whole of Spain as this has resulted in the desire for their own independent country. A referendum is to be conducted on September 2017 to ascertain whether Catalonia should or should not remain a part of Spain.

Crimea, Russia
Crimea is a region located at the Crimean peninsula located at Russia. This particular region has been disputed over the years as to ascertain the real owner of the region. In 1783 the region was handed to the Soviet Union, while in 1954 following the independence of Ukraine it was given to Ukraine. In 1991 there was another dispute in which the region was handed back to Russia. The people of Crimea feel that they neither belong to both countries as this has resulted in the desire for freedom.

New Caledonia, France
New Caledonia is a special region in France located at the southwest Pacific. This region feel less belonging to France as they have their own special government. They have been agitating for independence for long as the French government doesn't want to let go.

Boungainville, Papua New Guinea
Boungainville is an island in Papua New Guinea. It is located in between Papua and Solomon islands, as the residents of Boungainville feel more belonging to Solomon island than Papua New Guinea. They are very autonomous as they have their government, they despise the government of Papua also. They once declared independence for themselves as it resulted into the War of 1988 to 1998 of which the Boungainville Revolutionary Army lost.

Scotland, UK
Scotland is one of the countries making up the UK, the Scottish people are very different as they have a unique culture and a set of beautiful aspiring traditions. Back then Scotland was one of the strongest countries in the world during those times. In 1603, King James VI the King of Scotland and England upon inheritance unified the two kingdoms to form Great Britain.
The people of Scotland wants total autonomy from the UK, and total control of their own affairs.

Veneto, Italy
The movement for freedom by the Venetians has attained greater height as many people are now in support of their freedom. Venice is one of the 20 regions of Italy, they are very industrious and hardworking. The Veneto wine is one of the product of their hardwork. Infact they are autonomous only waiting for full recognition.

Palestine, Israel
This has posed a major problem on the Israeli State Government as the US is bent on making the Palestinian state a reality in Israel.

Greenland, Denmark
Greenlanders really want independence from Denmark as this has posed a challenge to the Danish government. Danish influence reached GL in 1380 with the reign of Olav iv in Norway. Although previously under the Danish monarchy for 400yrs, it was a former possession of the Norwegian people for 3quarters. Iceland and Faroe islands were part until 1814.

Kurdistan
The Kurdish people is a tribe that spans over four countries, north of Iraq, northwest of Iran, Republic of Turkey and Syria. They want a sovereign state of their own.

Biafra, Nigeria
Biafra consists of people that mostly occupy the southeast and south south of Nigeria, with the majority tribes of igbo and the minority tribes of Anaang, ibibio, ijaw efik urhobo and others.
Although officially dissolved as a nation in 1970 during the war of 1967-1970 in Nigeria, these people are still protesting for freedom.

Quebec, Canada
Quebec is the second largest city in Canada. These people are the french speaking people of Canada that desire complete autonomy from the Canadian government. In 1980-1995, a sovereignty referendum was carried out to determine whether Quebec becomes a country but the votes to leave lost by one percent. In 2006, The Canadian House of Commons passed a symbolic motion recognising The Quebec as a nation within a United Canada.

Tibet, China
Tibet is an autonomous region in China that wants independence from China. They are very peaceful uunlike the Uygurstan and this has made them to be considered.

Kashmir, India
Kashmir is a region that has been disputed by India and Pakistan which resulted in the war between India and Pakistan, wars of 1947 and 1965 as well as the wars of Kargiliar.

New Afrika, USA

I disagree. Let them go if they want to. it's no biggie.

I would want something like United Nigeria instead of Nigeria. Igbo States, Yoruba States, SS States and Hausa States can come together but be in control of their resources.
