Five Things We Learned From Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea by Kayzybaba(m): 8:23am On Jan 05, 2017
Dele Alli scored two headers as Tottenham Hotspur ended Chelsea‘s winning run in the Premier League in an entertaining encounter at White Hart Lane yesterday night. Chelsea had won their previous 13 Premier League games in a row and a success on this occasion would have seen them surpass Arsenal’s record for consecutive top-flight victories. However, it was Tottenham who prevailed with a 2-0 win, with the in-form Alli twice latching on to dangerous deliveries from Christian Eriksen that served to bamboozle the usually resilient Chelsea back line. The Blues remain top of the table – five points clear of second-placed Liverpool, but their invincibility has now been smashed and, in the process, Tottenham showcased that they too cannot be discounted in the title race, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side now seven points adrift of the Blues.

The lessons
Here are five things we learned from yesterday game:
1) 3-4-3 is Tottenham’s best formation:3-4-3 is the best formation for Spurs, it maximises all their best players. Eric Dier and Jan Vertonghen have more time on ball to create. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose get to bomb on more. Victor Wanyama only has to tackle people but if he wants to pass he often has lots of time to do it. Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen live in the half-space where they can create and score with glee. and Harry Kane will always have lots of runners to link with when he drops. Eriksen was especially impressive as he provided two assists and had four attempts himself.
2) Chelsea’s defence can still be exposed:
Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta made just three interceptions between them
Chelsea’s back-line is still made up of individuals being held together by a system. If you prod the weak spots (Cesar Azpilicueta in the air, pretty much anything around Gary Cahill, get their wing-backs deep and play on the offside trap), you can expose them. Azpilicueta, meanwhile, failed to win a single tackle.
3) Tottenham bullied Chelsea’s midfield
Nemanja Matic was successful with just 43% of his attempted tackles.
The midfield pairing of Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante has been the bedrock of much of Chelsea’s good form this season, but Tottenham showed tonight that the duo are far from faultless. Mauricio Pochettino’s side pressurised Matic and Kante at every opportunity, with Kante not keeping the ball as well as he usually does (he had an average pass accuracy of 77%) and Wanyama giving him no room for manoeuvre. 4) Chelsea should have made greater use of their wing-backs:
A key part of the 3-4-3 formation that is so treasured by Conte is the ability of the wing-backs to cause numerous problems for the opposition going forwards. That certainly didn’t transpire here as Victor Moses lacked his usual vigour and Marcos Alonso was disappointing. Chelsea only made the decision to push their wing-backs forward in the second-half, while they should have adopted that approach from the outset.
5) Conte should have introduced Willian and Fabregas earlier:
Cesc Fabregas competed 85% of his attempted passes.
Conte watched on as Chelsea struggled to make an impact, and, a little surprisingly, the Italian was slow in making alterations. Cesc Fabregas and Willian, who both arguably should have started, are capable of providing directness, but they were introduced too late, with Fabregas only coming on in the 79th minute. The Spaniard retained possession well during his time on the field.
