History was made on Thursday, 5 January 2017 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja as Leicester forward Riyad Mahrez dethroned last year’s winner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon to win African Player of the Year 2016 award.

And Denis Onyango, the first Ugandan goalie to win African Player of the Year – Based in Africa award.

Mahrez, becomes the first Algerian to win the prestigious individual honour in African football since its inception by CAF in 1992.

The 25-year-old Algerian, who inspired Leicester to the Premier League title, and Algeria’s qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017,  is already the PFA Player of the Year and BBC African Footballer of the Year.

Senegal and Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Borussia Dortmund's Gabonese forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were also in the running for the award.

But last year’s winner, Aubameyang, finished in 2nd place. While Mane finished in 3rd place.

Meanwhile, Denis Onyango of The Cranes was voted African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) 2016.

He became the first goalkeeper to scoop the award designed to reward players who ply their trade on the continent.

Asisat Oshoala of The Super Falcons of Nigeria and Arsenal won the Women’s Player of the Year award.

Also, Arsenal and Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi won the young player award. As his national teammate and Manchester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho won the Most Promising Talent award. And Nigeria's Super Falcons are the Women’s National Team of the Year after winning their 8th AFCON Title.

mahrez is the third algerian to win it , after Lakhdar Belloumi 1981 and Rabah Madjer 1987
