Diezani Allison-Ma­dueke, nee Agama, born into a royal and wealthy family in the Epie clan from Yenaka community in Yenegoa local government area of Bayelsa State, lived up to that reputation of royalty, luxuriating in opulence fit only for a princess as she bestrode the corridors of Nige­ria’s power house, Aso Rock Villa under for­mer President Jonathan.

She was born on December 6, 1960, three months after Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule, Diezani’s father, His Royal Majesty, King Frederick Abiye Agama was among the first set of Ijaw leaders to study abroad at the revered University of Southamp­ton where he studied Economics. A highly re­spected First Class Ruler, Agama was one of first set of few Nigerians that were members of the management staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company ( SPDC).

It was, therefore, little wonder that the young Diezani, the third of six children had the best of childhood in the oil-rich Niger Del­ta region where they were one of the first set of Black kids to have access to the swimming pool at Shell club, Port Harcourt.

In 1977 after her ‘A’ level, she left first for the United Kingdom and later Howard Uni­versity in the United States where she studied Architecture.

Having studied Architecture in England and then at Howard University in the United States, Diezani graduated from Howard with a Bachelor’s degree on 8 December 1992. She returned to Nigeria and joined Shell Petroleum Development Corporation that year. Getting a job in Shell wasn’t difficult for her like the un­derprivileged children of other people. Her fa­ther’s position in the oil giant was said to have made it easy for her to get a job there without joining the usual queue.

In 2002, she attended Cambridge University for her MBA. In April 2006, Shell appointed her its first female Ex­ecutive Director in Nigeria. She became the first female President of OPEC, elected at the 166th OPEC Ordinary meeting in Vienna on 27 November 2014.

She was named Nigeria’s minister of transportation on 26 July 2007 by the late President Yar’Adua as the only ministerial nominee of the then Vice President Good­luck Jonathan and thereafter moved to Mines and Steel De­velopment in 2008, and in April 2010 was appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources after Jonathan became the substantive President following the death of Yar’Adua.

Allison-Madueke studied architecture in Washington D.C. before returning to Nigeria in 1992 to work for her father’s old employer -Shell. Over the next 15 years she rose to become Shell’s first female director in Nigeria, completing an MBA at Cambridge University along the way, before she was appointed minister in 2007.

Multinational firms have some tough standards and internal guidelines.
