The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board yesterday said arrangement is in top gear for the commencement of payment of termly stipend of N19, 000 to each girl-child at primary and junior secondary schools in the state. The Executive Chairman of the board, Salisu Zakar, who made the disclosure while chatting with journalists in the Jigawa State capital Dutse, said all girls at basic education level would benefit from the programme that would be bankrolled by a development partner, Global Partnership on Education (GPE). Although, the executive chairman did not give the total number of those to benefit from the project, he said as soon as it was ready it would be known to the public. He said the intervention also captured the parent of the school girl, in which case the parent would benefit from N40,000, a gesture he said was aimed at discouraging parents from engaging girl-children in child labour that prevent them from going to school. “The payment of termly stipend of N19,000 to the girl-child and N40,000 to their parent will soon commence. This will encourage girl-child education in the state to a large extent. As soon as all arrangements, including reviewing the programme is completed, the project will fully come on board.” He said the project had a duration of four years, out of which three years had been exhausted in tidying up the processes, and explained that it needed to be reviewed to make it operate within the original time frame.
