Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration 2017: IBB Sues For National Unity by seunlly(m): 1:44am On Jan 15, 2017
Former Military President and elder statesman, General
Ibrahim Babangida, has called for national unity, noting
that “in our collective and individual resolves, we should
keep Nigeria’s unity, irrespective of sectional, religious and
cultural leanings”.
Speaking on the occasion of the 2017 Armed Forces
Remembrance Day Celebrations, Babangida expressed joy
that this year’s celebration is coming at a time our armed
forces are gaining more ground in the fight against
insurgency.
In a statement by his media office, IBB said, “As we
celebrate the Armed forces remembrance day, we should
take a stock of our uniqueness and sacrifices by our men
and women of the armed forces especially the fallen
heroes that paid the supreme sacrifices of maintaining
peace not only in our country but beyond the shores of
Nigeria”.
Commending the military for containing Boko Haram
terrorists, Babangida posited that recent events across
the country on general insecurity and economic sabotage
are a source of concern to every well-meaning Nigerian.
Meanwhile, Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has
expressed displeasure over the way and manner soldiers
who fought for the peace, unity and progress of the
country are neglected and pleaded for a special attention
and support for them.
He made the passionate plea during the launching of the
2017 official launch/ sale of poppy to mark the Armed
Forces Remembrance Appeal Week, held at Government
House, Minna.
Announcing a cash donation of N6million, on behalf of the
state government and a personal donation of N250, 000,
the governor directed all local government councils in the
state to support legionnaires.

No matter what we are passing through as a nation, peace and unity is NOT negotiable. What God has joined together, let no tribe or religion put asunder.

It's a good step in the right direction. Hope we don't get to abandon it and remember the fallen heroes only during a particular day.

Joining nigeria together suppose to be blessing.

But here in nigeria we dont have sensible leaders that can lead the country to success.

We all know the primary motive of the almagamation was for political and economic selfish reasons and was not intended to bring blessings in any way.

You dont get me.

I mean whatever the reason why we were joined together, we nigerian should be able to derive the huge benefit in togetherness and be great country.

nigeria has everything to be great but this country was waylaid mostly by the military generals and became destroyed.

A house divided among itself cannot stand irrespective of wealth or resources.

Even OBJ who fought against Biafra and normally sings One Nigeria mantra has admitted that the country is more divided now than ever.
The more we force unity, the more disunited we become.

This is because various ethnic groups do not find fulfilment in the Nigerian project. They are being suffocated by poverty, crime, terrorism, inflation, bad infrastructure, no light, joblessness, corruption and more caused by the poor governance by the elites.

Therefore, if we do not soon grant various regions much greater autonomy and self actualisation/governance within One Nigeria, there might be no Nigeria to call one.

We cannot keep quoting corruption by state governments to perpetuate an unwieldy centralised FG that is very far removed from the grassroots. Let bring governance closer to the people and let the people take it from there.

Yes, those of us sounding a note warning are labelled IPOB, militants, wailers and whatnot by the ostriches out there. They stick their head in the sand instead of seeing reason. shocked shocked

It is not a must to be united and together. ..you must know some people do not want the unity...pls do not force someone who does not like to be one with you...

I perfectly understand you people.
I am also not a pro one nigeria by force by force. Obviously there is no good to be together as we are now. The country is leading to no where.

Infact I would be extremely happy if everybody goes their way.
In this one nigeria, we dont have sensible leaders that can lead the country to make nigeria a country to be proud of.

Even the British that "united" us cannot even stay in European Union that they voluntarily applied and begged to join EEC back in the 60s and early 70s. They found increasing "unity" with Europe problematic and are now leaving.

Much less we that did not even ask to be amalgamated in Nigeria. grin grin

At the very least, there should be a greater decentralisation of govt, with much powers devolved to regions. Failing that we are staring a messy implosion in the face. A very messy ethno-religious one. Nigeria survived Biafra war because religion wasn't openly a major factor in it.

Of course IBB will love 'one nigeria' because it means more oil pension for him as an ex-president.
